This paper presents a methodology and a model for data conversion or translation. The model assumes that both source and target systems are available and that conversion interfaces may be required to interact between these systems and the conversion system. To achieve data conversion or translation using this approach, two languages are needed: 1) a language to describe the data structures, and 2) a language to specify the mapping between source and target data. This paper describes these two languages, DEFINE and CONVERT and gives numerous examples to show the capabilities of these languages and how they can be used in data conversion and restructuring. Both languages are high level and nonprocedural and have the power to deal with most situations encountered in data conversion processes. In addition, the paper also describes some of the facilities in the languages specifically designed for data checking in a data conversion process.

Many data base query languages, both stand-alone and coupled to a general purpose programming language, have been proposed. A number of issues that various designs have addressed in different ways are treated in this paper. These issues include the specification of performance options, side effects, implicitness, the handling of types and the time of binding. In all cases, the emphasis is on a comparative analysis, rather than on an exhaustive survey of proposals. Several general observations on language design for data base access are also made.

Observations on data manipulation languages and their embedding in general purpose programming languages

Electrical apparatus and more particularly vacuum electrical circuit breaker apparatus is taught. The electrical apparatus has a cylindrical movable terminal stem which is to be interconnected with a fixed terminal by way of a flexible conductor which is nevertheless relatively stiff and self supporting. This is accomplished by using interlayered elongated rectangular plates or sheets between the two aforementioned terminals. Connection to the circular stem is made by utilizing offset tabs around the periphery of a central hole at one end of each of the sheets. The offset allows the tabbed opening to be inserted over the stem. After which the tabs are sandwiched or compressed to lie in the plane of the sheet thus causing the edges of the tab to flow around the stem reducing contact resistance. Because there are multiple sheets in each flexible conductor packet, the number of three point contacts between the flexible conductors and the stem is increased.

An Overview of Recent Data Base Research.

Most of the literature on implementation of relations has been directed toward user features, with little attention paid to an overall conceptual view of underlying structures. Performance oriented considerations have been treated only for isolated problems.Toward a solution to these problems we describe a multi-level architecture for relational data base systems. This architecture distinguishes clearly between user oriented features, access path structures, data structures and file organization. It also allows efficiency problems to be isolated within levels and solved independently of each other, without impacting the logical structure of the user's virtual machine. Specific problems considered here in the context of this architecture include the mapping of relations into files, the implementation of fast access paths, and some file level optimizations that are particularly useful in relational systems.

A multi-level architecture for relational data base systems

In this paper the design criteria and the overall organization of MORIS, a new general purpose data management system, are illustrated.The system is based on a relational model of data, in which the data base is viewed as a collection of time varying relations of assorted degrees. The capabilities offered by this model are discussed. The architecture of the system is illustrated, which is designed to provide independence of application programs from growths in data types and changes in data representation, convertibility of data among different storage structures, and ability to provide solutions to a wide variety of unanticipated user's problems in fast and uniform retrieval times.The relational model allows the formal definition of an user oriented language, based on applied predicate calculus. The capabilities of this language for retrieving any information which is, implicitly or explicitly, represented in the data base, are discussed.
