This paper provides a brief review of current research activities that focus on the synthesis and controlled assembly of inorganic nanofibers by electrospinning, their electrical, optical and magnetic properties, as well as their applications in various areas including sensors, catalysts, batteries, filters and separators. We begin with a brief introduction to electrospinning technology and a brief method to produce ceramic nanofibers from electrospinning. We then discuss approaches to the controlled assembly and patterning of electrospun ceramic nanofibers. We continue with a highlight of some recent applications enabled by electrospun ceramic nanofibers, with a focus on the physical properties of functional ceramic nanofibers as well as their applications in energy and environmental technologies. In the end, we conclude this review with some perspectives on the future directions and implications for this new class of functional nanomaterials. It is expected that this review paper can help the readers quickly become acquainted with the basic principles and particularly the experimental procedure for preparing and assembly of 1D ceramic nanofiber and its arrays.

Electrospinning of ceramic nanofibers: Fabrication, assembly and applications

Designing MnO2 & carbon composite porous nanofiber structure for supercapacitor applications

The main objective of this study was to develop improved functional textiles for marine leisure clothing. Neoprene fabrics we re coated with carbon nanofibers (CNFs)/ Poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) composite solution compris- ing 0�16 wt% CNF in 1�5 wt% PVDF-HFP via electrospinning. Electrospinning was carried out from 15 to 24 kV. Neoprene textiles coated with the CNF/PVDF-HFP composite with various applied voltages were characterized as follows: Morphology was examined using an image analyzer microscope system and a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The thermal storage property of these materials was also analyzed using a ther- mal imaging camera with a forward looking infrared (FLIR) system. The resultant samples that were laminated with a knitted fabric composed of 80% nylon and 20% polyurethane were subjected to a thermal insulation property test. The test and control specimens were irradiated for 60 min. The test specimen and the control specimen were analyzed by con- sidering the differences in temperature between both specimens on heating. Water pene- tration resistance of the laminated knitted fabric with the CNF/PVDF-HFP composite nanoweb-coated neoprene fabric was measured. The water repellent property test was conducted using a drop shape analyzer (DE/DSA 100, Kruse). The results indicated that an increase in the density of nanoweb-coated neoprene fabric surface correlated with improved thermal storage, thermal insulation, water penetration resistance, and water repellent properties. In addition, increasing amounts of CNFs in the CNFs/PVDF-HFP com- posite solution resulted in increased thermal storage, thermal insulation, and water repel- lent properties.

Characterization and Manufacturing of Neoprene Fabrics Coated with CNF/PVDF-HFP Nanoweb

In this study, electrospinning Poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) fiber membrane for lithium-ion battery separator was prepared by simultaneous electrospinning and coaxial electrospinning. The membranes were treated using acetone under different temperature and time to increase the strength and stability of membrane. The surface morphology, porosity, electrolyte uptake, heat stability were studied in details. The electrochemical performance of samples was tested as a separator in the lithium-ion battery. The results showed that the composite fiber membrane with sheath/core structure exhibited better performance than that of the membrane prepared by simultaneous electrospinning. The heat shrinkage rate of sheath/core structure fiber membrane was 2.2 % at 150℃, electrolyte uptake was 490 % and the tensile breaking strength was 13.21MPa. The sheath/core structure fiber membrane ionic conductivity at room temperature was 2.87x10-3 S/cm, the electrochemical stability window was 5.3 V, and showed capacity of about 169.5 mAh/g at 0.2 C. After 100 charging and discharging cycling, the specific capacity retention rate of battery was 99 %. The obtained results suggest that PVDF-HFP/PMIA coaxial electrospun membrane can be used as separator for high performance lithium-ion battery.

Enhanced Treatment of Electrospun PVDF-HFP/PMIA Fiber Membrane as Separators for Lithium-Ion Batteries

MnO2 Loaded Flower-like Carbon Microspheres Derived from Polyimides for High-performance Supercapacitors

Carbon nanofibers were fabricated by electrospinning with various concentrations of MnO2, carbonization and activation processing for supercapacitor applications. Microstructure and electrochemical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the 4-point probe method, and a battery cycler system. It was observed that 8—20 wt.% MnO2/PAN nanofibers had 190— 260 nm diameters. The diameter decreased with increasing MnO2 concentration, but it increased for concentrations greater than 16 wt.%. The 16 wt.% MnO2 solution produced the nanofibers with the smallest diameter. The nanofibers showed capacitor characteristics when fabricated into electrodes, and their electrical conductivity and capacitance increased with increasing MnO2 concentration. The 20 wt.% MnO2/PAN carbon nanofibers showed the highest electrical conductivity value (2.82×10 -3 S/cm) and the highest capacitance value (186.28 F/g), which indicates their potential for development of supercapacitor electrodes.
