In this study, two erosion protection MMC coatings with WC particles were deposited by the plasma transferred arc (PTA) welding. One of the coatings with tungsten carbide WC in the NiBSi matrix (WC/NiBSi), and the second coating WC in NiCrBSi matrix (WC/NiCrBSi) was deposited by the flame spray process on the same substrate material S235JR steel. Experiments were performed using a gas blast sand erosion test facility with high-velocity erodent particles impact (approximately 100 m/s) at different particle impact angles (20°–45°), with an objective to study erosion wear characteristics and mass loss of two MMC coatings. Microstructural characterization of MMC coatings was done by scanning electron microscope equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, whereas X-ray diffraction analysis was used for identification of present phases. The hardness of coatings was determined by Vickers hardness measurements. WC/NiBSi obtained by the PTA process shows superior hardness and erosion properties.

Microstructure and Wear Behavior of MMC Coatings Deposited by Plasma Transferred Arc Welding and Thermal Flame Spraying Processes

In this research, Surface hardening was performed by two types of Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) filler metals based on Fe–Cr–C and Fe–Cr–C–Mo at the single, two and three- pass modes on the plain carbon steel. To evaluate the metallurgical and mechanical properties of hard facing layers, the optical microscope metallography, Scanning Electronic microscope, X-ray Diffraction test, hardness testing, Microhardness test and abrasion test was applied. Adding (1.1– 1.3) molybdenum to the Fe–Cr–C filler rod led to the formation of complex carbides of M7C3, in the microstructure. By increasing molybdenum, the wear resistance and hardness of the weld layers increased so that three-layers weld hardness reached to 62 HRC. Also, the hardness of complex carbides is 1299 HV which increased to 1596 HV by adding molybdenum.

Effect of Molybdenum on Metallurgical and Wear Properties of Fe–Cr–C Hard facing alloy

A ferrous-based coating with significant chromium was fabricated on aluminum alloy substrate using a plasma spray technique. The tribological performance of the as-fabricated ferrous-based coating sliding against different coatings including Cr, CrN, TiN, and diamond-like carbon (DLC) in an engine oil environment were comparatively studied. Results showed that the high hardness of the sprayed ferrous-based coating was achieved due to the dispersion strengthening effect of Cr7C3 phase embedded in the austenite matrix. The ferrous-based coating exhibited low friction coefficients when coupled with these four coating counterparts, which could be attributed to the boundary lubricating effect of engine oil. Abstract The microstructure of iron-based alloy (FeCrC) cladding layers on the surface of Q235B mild steel was analyzed by means of SEM, XRD, and EPMA tests. The results indicated that structure morphology of FeCrC alloy cladding layers by TIG welding is mainly hexagonal and elongated in shape. These structures were composed of some hard phases, such as Cr23 C6, Cr3 C2, and Cr7 C3. When element B was added, the structure morphology of iron-based alloy cladding layers could be changed into an irregular clumpy and cracking shape, which appears as a Fe23(C, B)6 hard phase. When element V was added, the surface morphology was changed into a small clumpy shape, which was composed of (Fe, Cr) C and (Fe, Cr, V) C phase.

Effects of B and V on microstructure of FeCrC cladding layers on the surface of Q235B mild steel by TIG welding

In the present study, the surface of St52 steel was alloyed with preplaced Fe-Cr-C and Fe-Cr-Nb-C powders by using a tungsten-inert gas (TIG) heat source. The microstructure and phase composition of the alloyed surfaces were investigated using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction. Microhardness measurements were performed across the alloyed zone. The tribological behaviour of the coatings was evaluated using dry sliding wear tests at room temperature. It was found that the as-deposited coatings consisted of high volume fraction of carbides (Cr7C3, NbC). The Nb free and Nb-contained clad coatings both exhibited an excellent wear resistance compared to 0.22% C carbon steel under dry sliding wear tests. The wear resistance of Nb-contained clad coating was higher than that of the Nb-free clad coating because the hard carbide NbC was distributed in clad coating which increased the wear resistance of clad coating under dry sliding wear test.
