Role of artificial intelligence (AI) in fish growth and health status monitoring: a review on sustainable aquaculture

The effects of stocking density on fish welfare are complex and involve many interacting parameters. This complex relationship between fish welfare, stocking density and influencing factors make it challenging to define a specific optimal (“golden”) stocking density. Indeed, previously published recommendations on stocking density for different species of aquaculture interest are incredibly variable even at the same life stage, and can also vary widely within a rearing unit. Production density can be estimated quite accurately if the farmer has good biomass control and a known water volume, but it is difficult to set minimum and maximum stocking density levels that will protect welfare. However, there is little doubt that stocking densities that are too low or too high can have negative impacts on welfare and/or production. Here, we propose how to select density on captive fish and monitor its potential effects integrating 1) solid welfare assessment based on operational welfare indicators and 2) good management practices. Regulation directly limiting stocking density is likely to be unworkable and ineffective, and a more rational option might be to prescribe acceptable levels of different welfare indicators (e.g., water quality, health, nutritional condition and behavioral indicators), which together with a positive economic balance of the company, allow to estimate the most suitable range of fish density for each particular species, life-stage and production systems.

Finding the “golden stocking density”: A balance between fish welfare and farmers' perspectives

An important functional advantage of hypoxic hypometabolism is that it blunts the acid-base consequences of hypoxia. Hypoxia can lead to anaerobiosis and metabolic acidosis and, in animals that are apneic, to respiratory acidosis. A fall in blood and tissue pH is a major limiting factor in hypoxic tolerance and a variety of strategies occur in vertebrates, in concert with hypometabolism, to respond to this acid-base challenge. These include sequestering of lactic acid away from the circulating blood during the hypoxic exposure, either in underperfused tissues or in mineralized tissues, supplementing extracellular buffering by releasing bone mineral into the circulation, and utilizing alternative metabolic pathways for anaerobiosis to produce ethanol rather than lactate as the principal end-product. For submerged air-breathing ectotherms, effective cutaneous O 2 and CO 2 exchange can also allow an animal to avoid or minimize both anaerobiosis and respiratory acidosis. These responses serve to maintain a viable acid-base state in the body and to extend the time that the hypoxic stress can be endured.

Acid-base balance during hypoxic hypometabolism: selected vertebrate strategies

Simple Summary Processed animal proteins, such as poultry by-product meal (PBM) and insect meal from black soldier fly (BSFM), are receiving growing interest as alternative or complementary protein sources for carnivorous farmed fish diets, due to their high nutritional value and low environmental footprint. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of PBM and BSFM as partial substitutes for vegetable protein in fishmeal-free diets on growth, whole-body composition, nutrient-energy mass balance and retention, digestive functions, stress, metabolic status, innate immunity, and liver health in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The overall results showed that fishmeal-free diets, including high levels of both PBM and BSFM, either singly or in combination, improved growth, dietary nutrient and energy utilization, and gut function relative to a plant-protein control diet or a fishmeal-based one, with no detrimental effects on fish welfare. Abstract This study compared the nutrient-energy retention, digestive function, growth performance, and welfare of rainbow trout (ibw 54 g) fed isoproteic (42%), isolipidic (24%), fishmeal-free diets (CV) over 13 weeks. The diets consisted of plant-protein replacement with graded levels (10, 30, 60%) of protein from poultry by-product (PBM) and black soldier fly H. illucens pupae (BSFM) meals, either singly or in combination. A fishmeal-based diet was also tested (CF). Nitrogen retention improved with moderate or high levels of dietary PBM and BSFM relative to CV (p < 0.05). Gut brush border enzyme activity was poorly affected by the diets. Gastric chitinase was up-regulated after high BSFM feeding (p < 0.05). The gut peptide and amino acid transport genes were differently regulated by protein source and level. Serum cortisol was unaffected, and the changes in metabolites stayed within the physiological range. High PBM and high BSFM lowered the leukocyte respiratory burst activity and increased the lysozyme activity compared to CV (p < 0.05). The BSFM and PBM both significantly changed the relative percentage of lymphocytes and monocytes (p < 0.05). In conclusion, moderate to high PBM and BSFM inclusions in fishmeal-free diets, either singly or in combination, improved gut function and nutrient retention, resulting in better growth performance and the good welfare of the rainbow trout.

Growth and Welfare of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in Response to Graded Levels of Insect and Poultry By-Product Meals in Fishmeal-Free Diets

This chapter introduces principles for welfare assessment of farmed fish. The introduction details the developments in science and society regarding the proposition that fish have a welfare state and that welfare assessment is important. The next sections of the chapter highlight the neurological basis of fish welfare and outline the primary welfare needs of the fish; appropriate water environment, adequate nutrition, good health, the expression of (species-specific) behaviors and safety. The second half of the chapter discusses fish welfare assessment, including the selection of welfare indicators, which can be both input-based and outcome-based. It also discusses issues related to conducting on-farm welfare assessment and how to integrate welfare outcomes into an overall welfare assessment. The final section of the chapter looks at some future developments and directions related to the validation and standardization of welfare indicators, precision fish farming and new sensor-based technologies aimed for tracking and monitoring the welfare of individual fish.

Theoretical basis and principles for welfare assessment of farmed fish

When fish are reared for food production in aquaculture, they can be held in different types of rearing systems and subjected to various husbandry routines and operations. Each of these systems or operations can present different welfare risks to the fish, which in turn are dependent upon both the species and its life stage. In this chapter, we address and outline potential welfare hazards the fish may encounter in a wide range of existing and emerging rearing systems used for on-growing. These systems include: (1) pond-based aquaculture, (2) flow-through systems, (3) semi-closed containment systems, (4) RAS, (5) net cages and (6) farming offshore using sea cages in exposed conditions. We also outline potential welfare hazards for two key farming operations: transport and slaughter. We present the tools the farmer can use to assess fish welfare during on-growing and also outline relevant welfare actions that can be taken to militate against welfare hazards.
