Field experiments were conducted near Beaumont, TX, to evaluate red rice control in imidazolinone-tolerant rice. Imazethapyr was applied preplant incorporated (PPI) and preemergence (PRE) at 70 and 105 g ai/ha and postemergence (POST) at 36, 52, and 70 g/ha. Single imazethapyr applications were made at each rate and timing and in sequential PPI or PRE followed by POST treatments. Red rice control ranged from 92 to 98% with sequential imazethapyr applications. Red rice control was higher when imazethapyr was applied PPI alone than PRE alone. But when these treatments were followed by a POST application of imazethapyr, there were no differences in red rice control between PPI and PRE application. Red rice control with sequential treatments was not improved with increased rates of imazethapyr POST. Control of Red Rice (Oryza sativa) in Imidazolinone-Tolerant Rice (O. sativa)1

Field studies were conducted at five locations in North Carolina and Virginia in 1996 and 1997 to evaluate weed control and peanut (Arachis hypogaea) response to diclosulam that was applied preemergence (PRE) and in systems with commercial standards. All plots received a preplant incorporated (PPI) treatment of ethalfluralin at 840 g ai/ha. Diclosulam controlled common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.), eclipta (Eclipta prostrata L.), entireleaf morningglory (Ipomoea hederacea var. integriuscula Gray), ivyleaf morningglory [Ipomoea hederacea (L.) Jacq.], pitted morningglory (Ipomoea lacunosa L.), and prickly sida (Sida spinosa L.) as well as and frequently better than the commercial standards of acifluorfen plus bentazon applied postemergence (POST), paraquat plus bentazon early POST followed by (fb) imazapic POST, or imazapic POST. Systems with ethalfluralin PPI plus diclosulam PRE at 26 g ai/ha fb acifluorfen plus bentazon POST controlled a broader spectrum of weeds and yielded greater than systems of ethalfluralin PPI fb imazapic POST or ethalfluralin PPI fb acifluorfen plus bentazon POST. Peanut exhibited excellent tolerance to diclosulam PRE at 17, 26, or 35 g/ha.

Weed Management in Peanut (Arachis hypogaea) with Diclosulam Preemergence

Seven postemergence (POST) herbicides were evaluated alone and in various mixtures for Palmer amaranth control in peanut from 1992 through 1994. AC 263,222 at rates as low as 0.04 kg/ha controlled ' 95% Palmer amaranth. Imazethapyr at rates of 0.05 to 0.07 kg/ha controlled ' 90% Palmer amaranth in 2 of 3 yr. Acifluorfen alone or in combination with bentazon or 2,4-DB and lactofen alone controlled > 90% Palmer amaranth in 2 of 3 yr. Bentazon or pyridate failed to provide adequate control (? 60%), while 2,4-DB provided good control (80%) in only 1 of 3 yr. Control of Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) in peanut (Arachis hypogaea) with postemergence herbicides

The efficacy of imazethapyr in drill-seeded imidazolinone-resistant rice was evaluated in Louisiana in 2000 and 2001. Imazethapyr was applied preemergence (PRE), or no PRE, followed by a postemergence (POST) application of imazethapyr alone, or in a mixture with bensulfuron, bentazon plus aciflurofen, carfentrazone, halosulfuron, propanil plus molinate, triclopyr, or V-10029. Imazethapyr applied PRE followed by a POST application of imazethapyr controlled barnyardgrass equivalent to or higher than other treatments evaluated. Red rice control at 35 days after postemergence treatment (DAT) was 66 to 81% with imazethapyr applied PRE followed by any POST application, but a reduction in control was observed with a POST application of imazethapyr. Although alligatorweed control increased with POST applications, these treatments suggested only suppression. Potential Use of Imazethapyr Mixtures in Drill-Seeded Imidazolinone-Resistant Rice

Experiments were conducted from 1991 through 1993 to evaluate AC 263,222 and imazethapyr for yellow and purple nutsedge control in peanut. AC 263,222 at 0.05 to 0.07 kg/ha controlled purple nutsedge (88 to 99% late season) whether applied preplant incorporated (PPI), preemergence (PRE), early postemergence (EPOST) at peanut emergence, or postemergence (POST). Yellow nutsedge control with AC 263,222 was inconsistent at the 0.04 kg/ha rate; however, the 0.05 and 0.07 rate gave 88% early season yellow nutsedge control, but late season control was variable. Yellow nutsedge control with soil-applied treatments of AC 263,222 and imazethapyr were similar but AC 263,222 provided better postemergence control than did imazethapyr. Purple nutsedge control was similar for both herbicides across all application methods.
