The controller is configured to control the operation of the coating unit, the lens curing unit and the post-cure unit. A lens forming composition may include an aromatic containing polyether polyethylenic functional monomer, a photoinitiator, and a coinitiator. The lens forming composition may be cured by the application of activating light or activating light and heat.

A process for transferring a coating onto at least one optical surface of a lens blank which comprises : providing a lens blank having at least one geometrically defined surface ; providing a support having an internal surface bearing a coating and an external surface ; depositing on said geometrically defined surface of said lens blank or said coating a pre-measured amount of a curable glue ; moving relatively to each other the lens blank and the support to either bring the coating into contact with the curable glue or bring the curable glue into contact with the geometrically defined surface of the lens blank ; applying a sufficient pressure onto the external surface of the support so that the thickness of a final glue layer after curing is less than 100 micrometers ; curing the glue ; and withdrawing the mold part to recover the lens blank with the coating adhered onto its geometrically defined surface.

A method of manufacturing a prescription lens, for eyeglasses on site by compression molding, in a pair of upper and lower molds having a mold surfaces from a thermoplastic preformed lens blank having opposite surfaces and a periphery, comprising the steps of: preheating a preform blank at a first temperature and preheating the upper and lower molds to a second higher temperature; positioning the preheated preform between the upper and lower preheated molds such that the preform makes a single point or line contact with each of the mold surfaces; initially compressing the preformed at a first fixed rate of speed regardless of pressure exerted on the preform, with the preform being compressed to about 4 mm of a predetermined lens thickness desired for the prescription lens; finally compressing the preform to a substantially finished prescription lens at a second fixed rate of speed substantially higher than the first fixed rate of speed regardless of pressure exerted on the preform while substantially maintaining the predetermined temperature, and shutting off the heating to the molds, and stopping travel of the molds with respect to each other upon reaching the predetermined lens thickness; and cooling the molds to another, but lower predetermined temperature; and thereafter opening the molds so as to remove the finished prescription lens.

An eyeglass lens forming composition containing light absorbing compounds which may undergo light initiated polymerization is provided. Typically, lens forming compositions that absorb light do not permit enough activating radiation to penetrate into the depths of the lens cavity to adequately initiate polymerization of the lens forming composition. An embodiment of the invention provides a system and method for curing such a lens forming composition to form a lens that does not transmit ultraviolet light. Activating light is used having a wavelength greater than the wavelengths of light which the light absorbing compounds absorb. The power of the formed lenses may be controlled by varying the lens forming conditions. Additionally, the lens forming process may be controlled using a microprocessor based control system.

An eyeglass lens is made of layers which include an outer, convex hard coating, a layer of hard epoxy, a PVA film, a layer of soft epoxy, a layer of adhesive, a base material, and an inner, concave hard coating. The major steps in producing the lens are to 1 : prepare a clean, soft PVA film; 2: form the PVA film into the desired curved shape using a convex mold; 3: add hard epoxy to the outer, convex side of the PVA film; 4: add soft epoxy to the inner, concave side; 5: add the base material to the inner, concave side; and 6: harden and package the lens.
