The introduction history, systematics, transport vectors and distribution patterns of 85 introduced and 39 cryptogenic marine or estuarine animals and plants of South Africa are presented. This represents an addition of 93 species compared with previous lists. Taxa covered include protists, dinoflagellates, sponges, cnidarians, annelids, crustaceans, pycnogonids, insects, molluscs, brachiopods, bryozoans, echinoderms, ascidians, fish, algae and higher plants. For each species a justification motivating its inclusion as an introduction into South African shores or its cryptogenic status, is provided. Challenges associated with this type of inventory work are explored and major patterns of bioinvasion within the region are summarized briefly.

Introduced and cryptogenic marine and estuarine species of South Africa

We present here a checklist of recent marine bryozoans recorded in the literature from Brazil. The total number of species recorded is 346. The most diverse group is the order Cheilostomata with 271 species, followed by the order Ctenostomata, with 42 species, and the order Cyclostomata, with 33 species. Included in the checklist are records by state and citations for species with synonyms utilized in Brazilian works.

The little-known bryozoan Membranipora eburnea HINCKS is redescribed and designated the type species of the new genus Jellyella. The twinned ancestrula of this malacostegan-grade cheilostome places it within the Membraniporidae, along with Membranipora and Biflustra. Jellyella is distinguished by the presence of intricately branched processes (spinules) projecting into the zooidal chambers, and a calcitic skeletal ultrastructure of transversely arranged, elongate spindles. The "Gulf weed bryozoan," Membranipora tuberculata (Bosc), is also assigned to the new genus as Jellyella tuberculata. Both species of Jellyella seem primarily to encrust floating substrates: based on available museum material, J. eburnea usually grows on drifting shells of dead individuals of the cephalopod Spirula but can also be found as an epizoan of the floating gastropod Janthina and on algae; J. tuberculata is normally an epiphyte of Sargassum. Collections of Spirula shells from beaches around the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans are commonly encrusted by J. eburnea but very seldom by any other bryozoans. Jellyella is therefore interpreted as a rare example of a pseudoplanktonic genus among the typically benthic bryozoans. An annotated list is provided for the genera and species of Chilopoda Geophilomorpha recorded from Europe, including Macaronesia The list derives from a critical evaluation of all published information All synonyms are also listed and all taxonomic and nomenclatorial novelties are discussed Additionally, all available genus-group and species-group names are listed, together with type species and type localities respectively To date, 452 available species-group names and 95 available genus-group names have been applied to European geophilomorphs, together with another 10 unavailable names A total of 179 species in 37 genera are provisionally recognized here, bu t the actual taxonomic identity of 84 of these species is uncertain because their morphology is in Chilopoda Geophilomorpha of Europe: a revised list of species, with taxonomic and nomenclatorial notes.

The cheilostome genera Herentia Gray and Therenia David and Pouyet, placed in the recently established family Escharinidae Tilbrook, were hitherto generally regarded as synonyms of Escharina Milne Edwards. Here we resurrect and define both genera, and revise their eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean species, which turn out to be species complexes. Besides presenting a re‐description of the genotype of Herentia, H. hyndmanni (Johnston) from the British Isles, new species from Madeira (Herentia andreasi n. sp.) and the Adriatic Sea (Herentia majae n. sp.) are introduced. The ancestrula of H. hyndmanni, a kenozooid with an almost completely calcified, gymnocystal frontal shield, is here documented for the first time. For Therenia it can be shown that the type species T. porosa (Smitt) from Florida differs from the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean congeners, all of which were hitherto referred to as this species.
