Two experiments done with a short-term memory paradigm examined the influence of shifts in the starting position on the reproduction of kinesthetic location (Exp. 1) and on distance cues (Exp. 2). We assessed possible causes of the systematic pattern of undershooting and overshooting as related to the shift in the starting position. In each experiment, two groups of 10 students were given 25 trials, and each had criterion and reproduction tasks involving linear-positioning movements with a 10-sec. retention interval. Each experiment had two independent variables, the group of subjects and the shift in the starting position. The two groups differed in the possible sources of information, the distance moved (Exp. 1) or the end-location (Exp. 2), which were assumed to cause undershooting and overshooting during reproduction. Analysis showed that the information about the distance moved may produce undershooting and overshooting in reproduction of the end-location (Exp. 2). Also, the information about the end-location may produce undershooting and overshooting in reproduction of the distance moved (Exp. 2). The findings were further evidence of interference between location and distance cues in motor short-term memory.

Context: A model of agility ladder tool was designed in the current study to increase cognitive-motor performance in athletes with more advantages over conventional agility ladders. Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop agility tool for athletes using Jami agility table (JAT) which has been the latest training model by creating mental challenge and recruiting muscle movement units for agile performance of sports skills. Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study, a systematic review of agility development methods were presented to improve psychomotor performance in athletes and then the JAT agility table model was introduced. Based on the JAT, a special code is designed in order to develop agility both physically and mentally aspects, and athlete is always engaged with new algorithms of movement. Results: One of the exclusive functions of JAT, is to increase contextual interference in the performance of motor skills which increases reaction time (RT) in athletes significantly. Laterality detection and empowering non-dominant hemisphere is one of the applications of the JAT, which ultimately increases the comprehensive development of the central nervous system (CNS). Conclusions: The most important aspect of JAT is based on increasing contextual interference and random learning in learners and athletes. Additionally, neuromuscular coordination is one of JAT functions which would improve agility performance in athletes. JAT mechanism has been designed based on Movement algorithm models. In such a training model, which imposes a better cognitive function on the learner and athlete to create better motor memory, the process of constant algorithms is converted into variable and instantaneous algorithms, resulting in more reliable motor outputs.

The mediating effect of learning on the interference between location and distance recall from motor short-term memory

The validity of the duomemory notion (i.e. the concept of two separate memory systems, one for recently presented events and another for learned acts) for motor behavior was tested in an experiment which sought to determine the extent to which interference differentially influenced the recall of a movement when it is initially experienced and after it is repeatedly practiced. Using a traditional linear-positioning task, subjects moved to five defined target locations on each trial and after a retention interval attempted to recall the targets in reverse order. One location was repeated on each of 10 trials while the others were always different. Control subjects were presented and recalled only the repeated criterion location on each trial. The results indicated (a) a constant superiority of criterion recall accuracy for the control condition throughout the 10 trials and (b) and absence of improvement over practice by the experimental group in the recall of the criterion location relative to that of nonrepeated targets. The findings were interpreted as a lack of support for the duomemory notion, and the exploration of an alternative framework (Craik & Lockhart, 1972) for the investigation of memory for movement information was suggested.

A source of possible error in the design of many motor short-term memory studies- the effect of repeated testing of the same criterion positions- was evaluated together with a secondary factor, motivation. Using an arm-positioning task, three groups of five subjects, representing different motivational levels, were tested repeatedly on the same three test positions. Constant and variable error measures indicated significant effects of the repetition factor. Subjects became more accurate with repeated testing of the same positions as reflected by a positive shift in constant error in the direction of the criterion. There was an initial decrease and subjects' motivational level. The apparent assumption in prior studies, that presentations of intervening test items obviates a repetition effect, was clearly refuted. Thus, in many motor short-term memory studies, treatment effects have been inextricably mixed with the effects of repetition.
