In this book, Andrew Harvey sets out to provide a unified and comprehensive theory of structural time series models. Unlike the traditional ARIMA models, structural time series models consist explicitly of unobserved components, such as trends and seasonals, which have a direct interpretation. As a result the model selection methodology associated with structural models is much closer to econometric methodology. The link with econometrics is made even closer by the natural way in which the models can be extended to include explanatory variables and to cope with multivariate time series. From the technical point of view, state space models and the Kalman filter play a key role in the statistical treatment of structural time series models. The book includes a detailed treatment of the Kalman filter. This technique was originally developed in control engineering, but is becoming increasingly important in fields such as economics and operations research. This book is concerned primarily with modelling economic and social time series, and with addressing the special problems which the treatment of such series poses. The properties of the models and the methodological techniques used to select them are illustrated with various applications. These range from the modellling of trends and cycles in US macroeconomic time series to to an evaluation of the effects of seat belt legislation in the UK.

Forecasting, Structural Time Series Models and the Kalman Filter

This paper examines the literature on computer games and serious games in regard to the potential positive impacts of gaming on users aged 14 years or above, especially with respect to learning, skill enhancement and engagement. Search terms identified 129 papers reporting empirical evidence about the impacts and outcomes of computer games and serious games with respect to learning and engagement and a multidimensional approach to categorizing games was developed. The findings revealed that playing computer games is linked to a range of perceptual, cognitive, behavioural, affective and motivational impacts and outcomes. The most frequently occurring outcomes and impacts were knowledge acquisition/content understanding and affective and motivational outcomes. The range of indicators and measures used in the included papers are discussed, together with methodological limitations and recommendations for further work in this area.

A systematic literature review of empirical evidence on computer games and serious games

Although augmented reality (AR) has gained much research attention in recent years, the term AR was given different meanings by varying researchers. In this article, we first provide an overview of definitions, taxonomies, and technologies of AR. We argue that viewing AR as a concept rather than a type of technology would be more productive for educators, researchers, and designers. Then we identify certain features and affordances of AR systems and applications. Yet, these compelling features may not be unique to AR applications and can be found in other technological systems or learning environments (e.g., ubiquitous and mobile learning environments). The instructional approach adopted by an AR system and the alignment among technology design, instructional approach, and learning experiences may be more important. Thus, we classify three categories of instructional approaches that emphasize the ''roles,'' ''tasks,'' and ''locations,'' and discuss what and how different categories of AR approaches may help students learn. While AR offers new learning opportunities, it also creates new challenges for educators. We outline technological, pedagogical, learning issues related to the implementation of AR in education. For example, students in AR environments may be cognitively overloaded by the large amount of information they encounter, the multiple technological devices they are required to use, and the complex tasks they have to complete. This article provides possible solutions for some of the challenges and suggests topics and issues for future research.

We present a collaborative environment for spreadsheet-based activities, that overcomes such limitation allowing a smooth shift from single user to multiple user spreadsheet application deployment.

The development of current mobile applications is a challenging task because mobile devices are characterized by a variety of advanced services respect standard computers. In particular, these services as an example Map visualization, Web access, GPS localization, Camera, Accelerometer, and so on, interact with the applications in different ways, depending on the used mobile device platform. These challenges are further increased by the fact that each platform needs a different development process and provides a different framework to implement these mobile applications. In this paper we propose a common architecture and an unified development process implementing portable applications based on mobile services. This architecture is based on the ModelView-Control design pattern and provides a framework that generates the code starting from a formal algebraic specification. This specification integrates different formalisms such as LTL formulae and functional programming, permitting the description of structure and dynamic aspects of a mobile application. Moreover, we show how the proposed framework allows to generate Web map applications integrating different mobile services. Deriving workflow enactment rules from UML activity diagrams: a case study

Recently, the challenge of making geographic data available for analysis tasks also on the Internet has motivated the development of Web Geographic Information Systems (Web GIS). This term is referred to all the software products and services that allow geographic information to be accessed in different ways, by adopting Web technology. In this paper we describe a Web GIS developed for handling and promoting information about archaeological sites. In particular, the experimented system is one of the goals of a wider research project, resulting from a long term collaboration between the The aim of such a research activity is the development of an information system enabling heterogeneous users to exploit GIS capabilities and Web accessible data. The interaction between the two departments arose from the need of archaeologists who required a working tool that would allow them to manage the collected data in an integrated way that is not affected by any particular a priori interpretation. The prototype has been experimented to build a vectorial representation of Fratte Hill archaeological site (in the area of Salerno) within its physical context that considers all the stratigraphic information and the whole sequence of archaeological deposits.
