Characterizing and predicting 21700 NMC lithium-ion battery thermal runaway induced by nail penetration
Ashish V. Shelke,Jonathan E. H. Buston,Jason Gill,Daniel Howard,Katie C. Abbott,Steven L. Goddard,Elliott Read,Gemma Howard,Ahmed Abaza,Brian Guy Cooper,Jennifer X. Wen +10 more
TL;DR: In this article , a generic predictive tool is developed within the frame of the in-house version of OpenFOAM for nail induced thermal runaway (TR) in cylindrical cells, which treats the cell as a lumped block with anisotropic thermal conductivities and considers heat generation due to nail induced internal short circuit resistance, exothermic decomposition reactions and heat dissipation through convective and radiative heat transfer.

Comprehensive gas analysis of a 21700 Li(Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2) cell using mass spectrometry
Katie C. Abbott,Jonathan E. H. Buston,Jason Gill,Steven L. Goddard,Daniel Howard,Gemma Howard,Elliott Read,Rhiannon C. E. Williams +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper , the mass spectrometry (MS) was used to quantify the volume of gas produced and investigate how gas composition changes during different stages of cell failure, showing that during safety venting (SV), the major constituent gas is methane (CH4), which was positively correlated with SoC.
