The remarkable advances in biotechnology and health sciences have led to a significant production of data, such as high throughput genetic data and clinical information, generated from large Electronic Health Records (EHRs). To this end, application of machine learning and data mining methods in biosciences is presently, more than ever before, vital and indispensable in efforts to transform intelligently all available information into valuable knowledge. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is defined as a group of metabolic disorders exerting significant pressure on human health worldwide. Extensive research in all aspects of diabetes (diagnosis, etiopathophysiology, therapy, etc.) has led to the generation of huge amounts of data. The aim of the present study is to conduct a systematic review of the applications of machine learning, data mining techniques and tools in the field of diabetes research with respect to a) Prediction and Diagnosis, b) Diabetic Complications, c) Genetic Background and Environment, and e) Health Care and Management with the first category appearing to be the most popular. A wide range of machine learning algorithms were employed. In general, 85% of those used were characterized by supervised learning approaches and 15% by unsupervised ones, and more specifically, association rules. Support vector machines (SVM) arise as the most successful and widely used algorithm. Concerning the type of data, clinical datasets were mainly used. The title applications in the selected articles project the usefulness of extracting valuable knowledge leading to new hypotheses targeting deeper understanding and further investigation in DM.

Machine Learning and Data Mining Methods in Diabetes Research.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by hyperglycemia. It may cause many complications. According to the growing morbidity in recent years, in 2040, the world's diabetic patients will reach 642 million, which means that one of the ten adults in the future is suffering from diabetes. There is no doubt that this alarming figure needs great attention. With the rapid development of machine learning, machine learning has been applied to many aspects of medical health. In this study, we used decision tree, random forest and neural network to predict diabetes mellitus. The dataset is the hospital physical examination data in Luzhou, China. It contains 14 attributes. In this study, five-fold cross validation was used to examine the models. In order to verity the universal applicability of the methods, we chose some methods that have the better performance to conduct independent test experiments. We randomly selected 68994 healthy people and diabetic patients' data, respectively as training set. Due to the data unbalance, we randomly extracted 5 times data. And the result is the average of these five experiments. In this study, we used principal component analysis (PCA) and minimum redundancy maximum relevance (mRMR) to reduce the dimensionality. The results showed that prediction with random forest could reach the highest accuracy (ACC = 0.8084) when all the attributes were used.

Predicting Diabetes Mellitus With Machine Learning Techniques.

Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by high blood sugar. It may cause many complicated disease like stroke, kidney failure, heart attack, etc. About 422 million people were affected by diabetes disease in worldwide in 2014. The figure will be reached 642 million in 2040. The main objective of this study is to develop a machine learning (ML)-based system for predicting diabetic patients. Logistic regression (LR) is used to identify the risk factors for diabetes disease based on p value and odds ratio (OR). We have adopted four classifiers like naive Bayes (NB), decision tree (DT), Adaboost (AB), and random forest (RF) to predict the diabetic patients. Three types of partition protocols (K2, K5, and K10) have also adopted and repeated these protocols into 20 trails. Performances of these classifiers are evaluated using accuracy (ACC) and area under the curve (AUC). We have used diabetes dataset, conducted in 2009–2012, derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The dataset consists of 6561 respondents with 657 diabetic and 5904 controls. LR model demonstrates that 7 factors out of 14 as age, education, BMI, systolic BP, diastolic BP, direct cholesterol, and total cholesterol are the risk factors for diabetes. The overall ACC of ML-based system is 90.62%. The combination of LR-based feature selection and RF-based classifier gives 94.25% ACC and 0.95 AUC for K10 protocol. The combination of LR and RF-based classifier performs better. This combination will be very helpful for predicting diabetic patients.

Data-driven modeling and prediction of blood glucose dynamics: Machine learning applications in type 1 diabetes

Prolactin is a hormone that is mainly secreted by lactotroph cells of the anterior pituitary gland, and is involved in many biological processes including lactation and reproduction. Animal models have provided insights into the biology of prolactin proteins and offer compelling evidence that the different prolactin isoforms each have independent biological functions. The major isoform, 23 kDa prolactin, acts via its membrane receptor, the prolactin receptor (PRL-R), which is a member of the haematopoietic cytokine superfamily and for which the mechanism of activation has been deciphered. The 16 kDa prolactin isoform is a cleavage product derived from native prolactin, which has received particular attention as a result of its newly described inhibitory effects on angiogenesis and tumorigenesis. The discovery of multiple extrapituitary sites of prolactin secretion also increases the range of known functions of this hormone. This Review summarizes current knowledge of the biology of prolactin and its receptor, as well as its physiological and pathological roles. We focus on the role of prolactin in human pathophysiology, particularly the discovery of the mechanism underlying infertility associated with hyperprolactinaemia and the identification of the first mutation in human PRLR.

New insights in prolactin: pathological implications.

Diabetes mellitus is a major, and increasing, global problem. However, it has been shown that, through good management of blood glucose levels (BGLs), the associated and costly complications can be reduced significantly. In this pilot study, Elman recurrent artificial neural networks (ANNs) were used to make BGL predictions based on a history of BGLs, meal intake, and insulin injections. Twenty-eight datasets (from a single case scenario) were compiled from the freeware mathematical diabetes simulator, AIDA. It was found that the most accurate predictions were made during the nocturnal period of the 24 hour daily cycle. The accuracy of the nocturnal predictions was measured as the root mean square error over five test days (RMSE5day) not used during ANN training. For BGL predictions of up to 1 hour a RMSE5 day of (±SD) 0.15±0.04 mmol/L was observed. For BGL predictions up to 10 hours, a RMSE5 day of (±SD) 0.14±0.16 mmol/L was observed. Future research will investigate a wider range of AIDA case scenarios, real-patient data, and data relating to other factors influencing BGLs. ANN paradigms based on real-time recurrent learning will also be explored to accommodate dynamic physiology in diabetes.
