TL;DR: In this paper, 19 analyses by 18 different research groups, often using quite different methodologies, of 12 extreme events that occurred in 2012 are presented, and the differences also provide insights into the structural uncertainty of event attribution, the uncertainty that arises directly from the differences in analysis methodology.
Examining the role of unusually warm Indo‐Pacific sea‐surface temperatures in recent African droughts
Chris Funk,Chris Funk,Laura Harrison,Shraddhanand Shukla,Catherine Pomposi,Gideon Galu,Diriba Korecha,Gregory Husak,Tamuka Magadzire,Frank Davenport,Chris Hillbruner,Gary Eilerts,Benjamin F. Zaitchik,James P. Verdin +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the potential role played by unusually warm Indo-Pacific SS, where unusual is defined as a 1-in-6 year event, and showed that strong El Ninos may be followed by warm western Pacific SST conditions, which can lead to creating conditions conducive for successive and potentially predictable droughts in Southern Africa and Eastern Africa.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the question of whether sea surface temperatures (SSTs) caused the poor 2012 March-May eastern East African rains and increased the frequency of dry events over the past decade (2003-12), using two new Global Forecast System E. Figure E1b shows three month) Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI; McKee et al. 1993) values, based on 1981-2012 FEWS NET precipitation data.
