The effects of recent fire frequency and time-since-fire on plant community composition and species abundance in open-forest and woodland vegetation in Girraween National Park, south-east Queensland, Australia, were examined. Cover-abundance data were collected for shrub and vine species in at least 10 400-m(2) plots in each of four study areas. Study areas were within one community type and had burnt most recently either 4 or 9 years previously. Variations in fire frequency allowed us to compare areas that had burnt at least three times in the previous 25 years with less frequently burnt areas, and also woodlands that had experienced a 28-year interfire interval with more frequently burnt areas. Although species richness did not differ significantly with either time-since-fire or fire frequency, both these factors affected community composition, fire frequency being the more powerful. Moisture availability also influenced floristics. Of the 67 species found in five or more plots, six were significantly associated with time-since-fire, whereas 11 showed a significant difference between more and less frequently burnt plots in each of the two fire-frequency variables. Most species, however, did not vary in cover-abundance with the fire regime parameters examined. Even those species that showed a marked drop in cover-abundance when exposed to a particular fire regime generally maintained some presence in the community. Five species with the capacity to resprout after fire were considered potentially at risk of local extinction under regimes of frequent fire, whereas two species were relatively uncommon in long-unburnt areas. Variable fire regimes, which include interfire intervals of at least 15 years, could be necessary for the continuity of all species in the community.

Californian coastal sage scrub has floristically distinct subassociations with sharp boundaries in the Santa Monica Mountains. This mesoscale biogeographic pattern has been variously attributed to the timing and pattern of fire and to differences in the moisture availability on sites. An examination of the actual fire history of sites reveals that recent fire events are unlikely to have caused the observed patterns. Sites with similar fire histories are not as similar in vegetation as sites with different fire histories but similar aspect. Single short fire intervals do not result in dissimilar communities; fires are unlikely to recur with the same boundaries as these two subassociations. A simulation of shrub response to fire interval and intensity indicates that long-term fire trends are also unlikely to have caused the distinction or the sharp boundaries of the two subassociations. Both subassociations include species with life history characteristics adapted to short and to long fire intervals. The subassociations exist without regard to fire history.

Fire is a key ecological process influencing the population dynamics of small mammals. Whilst shifting competitive advantage amongst small mammal species following a single fire event is well-documented, there has been little investigation of the potential influence of fire frequency on small mammal interspecific interactions. In this study, we investigated the effect of fire frequency on the abundance of two small dasyurid mammals, Antechinus stuartii and A. flavipes, which occur sympatrically in some parts of their range. The two antechinus species are known to have different habitat preferences, so it is possible that fire regimes may promote their coexistence in areas of sympatry by altering vegetation structure. To investigate this possibility, we estimated the abundance of both species using replicate sites which differed in the number of times burnt (1–4) during the last four decades, but with identical time-since-fire. Proportionally, we captured greater numbers of A. stuartii in less frequently burnt sites and greater numbers of A. flavipes in more-frequently burnt sites. Hence, fire may mediate niche-separation between these two species. To clarify further this pattern of response to fire frequency, we investigated which structural habitat variables differed between fire frequencies, and compared antechinus abundances with structural vegetation characteristics. We found a trend for lower ground cover density under higher fire frequencies. This offers one potential explanation of the patterns of abundance that we observed. Our study provided insights into the complexities of small mammal responses to fire, and strongly suggests that fire could mediate competitive interactions between species.

The role and use of fire for biodiversity conservation in south-east Queensland: Fire management guidelines derived from ecological research

The purpose of the study was to examine the d i s t r i b u t i o n a l patterns of diatoms in the surface sediments of ten southern B r i t i s h Columbia i n l e t s with respect to oceanographic and hydrographic setting, and phytoplankton d i s t r i b u t i o n and productivity. The study area was divided on the basis of i n l e t type (high, medium, and low runoff), w i t h i n i n l e t gradients, and zones (northern, c e n t r a l , and southern). A small group of species dominated the 95 sediment assemblages. There was a f a i r l y good co r r e l a t i o n between the biocoenoses and the thanatocoenoses in the sense that most of those species reported as dominants in the phytoplankton were also dominants in the sediment assemblages. However, there were discrepancies and these could not be explained on the basis of the r e l a t i v e s i l i c i f i c a t i o n of the diatom valves. Skeletonema costatum, usually considered a w e a k l y s i l i c i f i e d , d i s s o l u t i o n s e n s i t i v e species, was abundant in B r i t i s h Columbia sediments. Both the p a c i f i c a and the a e s t i v a l i s forms of Thalassiosira a e s t i v a l i s were abundant in the phytoplankton, but only the p a c i f i c a form was preserved well in the sediments. Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii, which i s found in other sediment assemblages, was rare in most B r i t i s h Columbia sediments. The d i s t r i b u t i o n a l patterns of freshwater and marine l i t t o r a l species appeared to be ind i c a t i v e of river sources entering the estuarine system. The absolute abundance of diatoms in the sediment assemblages increased from the northern to the southern zone. The understorey vegetation of nine localities with different fire histories from open eucalypt forest near Melbourne, Victoria, was analysed by principal component analysis. Floristically, localities were quite similar; however, structural differences caused mainly by different burning regimes of recent years were more evident. An analysis of presence-absence data displayed a marked discontinuity that was explainable in terms of the timing and intensity of a recent fire. Using unstandardized height data the pattern was related to inter- and intra-locality differences in time since the last fires. An analysis of standardized height data demonstrated a connection between understorey structure and fire frequency.
