The method of anti-scale stabilization treatment of cooling water of the circulating cooling system (CCS) with sulphuric acid to reduce the content of bicarbonate and carbonate ions allows to effectively reduce scale formation processes in power plant’s cooling systems. The results of the research and analysis of the sulphuric acid dosage to ensure the water-chemical regime of the reversible cooling system are presented in the example of the Rivne NPP. The analysis of the results of the control of the technology of stabilization treatment of cooling water with sulphuric acid was carried out, as the influence of the technological changes on the content of sulfate ions in the discharge water and the influence of the water discharge into a water body were evaluated. The sulphuric acid stabilization treatment makes it possible to neutralize the alkalinity caused by the content of bicarbonate and carbonate ions and to convert the proportion of calcium ions bound to bicarbonate and carbonate ions into a permanent hardness that is not prone to scale formation under the influence of temperature and has a lower tendency to scale formation. The use of sulphuric acid may be suitable for the optimal choice of water chemistry regime for scale reduction in CCS, according to the criteria of acidification of additional cooling water, which is the dosing criterion. The technological regimes for CCS stabilization treatment with sulphuric acid introduced at the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) ensured a decrease in the use of sulphuric acid and a decrease in discharges into the water body by an average of 220 t/year, a decrease in the increase in the content of sulfate ions before the water intake and after the water discharge of the Rivne NPP, which correlates with a decrease in the amount of sulphuric acid used for CCS water treatment and a decrease in the environmental impact on the water bodies of the Styr River.

Technological and Environmental Problems in the Stabilization Treatment of the Main Condenser Cooling Circuit by Sulfuric Acid

Cryogenic separation carbon capture is a promising green carbon emission reduction approach, which is rarely applied due to its high cold energy requirement. This work proposes a hybrid system combining cryogenic separation carbon capture and liquid air energy storage (CS-LAES), comprehensively utilizing low-temperature and high-pressure conditions of LAES to reduce the energy consumption of cryogenic CO2 separation. Flue gas with higher carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations from coal-fired power plants is compressed in the charging process of CS-LAES instead of air. The CO2 is captured, and the CO2-free air is liquefied and stored for later use. The results demonstrate that the carbon capture energy consumption of the CS-LAES system is 1.12 GJ/ton, which is 0.68 GJ/ton lower than that of conventional cryogenic capture technology (1.80 GJ/ton). The CO2 capture rate of 99.97 % is higher than that of most existing cryogenic CO2 capture technologies. Moreover, the standalone total exergy efficiency (S_TEE) for energy storage of the CS-LAES system was 63.40 %, which is 5.22 % higher than the baseline LAES. Meanwhile, the dynamic payback period of the CS-LAES system is 5.82 years, which is more economical than that of baseline LAES (12.89 years) due to avoiding expensive carbon tax. 

Performance analysis of a hybrid system combining cryogenic separation carbon capture and liquid air energy storage (CS-LAES)

To achieve sustainable energy supply and carbon neutral, it is essential to enhance the efficiency and reduce carbon emissions for coal power. In this study, a coal power generation system based on supercritical water gasification (SCWG) with full CO2 capture is proposed. The system achieves autothermal gasification by partial oxidation of coal in the SCWG gasifier. Gasification water is preheated by turbine exhaust, and organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is integrated to recover the waste heat of turbine exhaust. Simulation and thermodynamic analysis models of the system are developed. Results show the energy efficiency and exergy efficiency of system with benchmark parameters reach 52.95 % and 54.11 %, respectively. The largest exergy destruction occurs in gasifier and accounts for 41.36 % of the total exergy loss. Irreversibility of heat transfer mainly occurs in water heat exchanger and ORC, accounting for 4.81 % and 5.59 % of the total loss. Effects of key operating parameters on the system performance are investigated. Results show the optimal turbine exhaust pressure is 0.1 MPa, and higher turbine inlet temperature can enhance the system efficiency. System with reheat configuration shows potential in thermodynamic and economic aspects, and the exergy efficiency of double reheat system is improved from 37.25 % to 45.08 %.
