Research Summary
Constructing narratives of transformative change is an important but challenging practice through which strategy makers attempt to influence acceptance of an ongoing transformation. To understand whether and how strategy makers can construct a steady influx of captivating narratives of transformative change, we analyzed how one noted strategy maker assisted the successful transformation of his organization over three decades by orchestrating the production of change narratives. Our analysis reveals that the strategy maker constructed and reconstructed meanings of change over time using three sets of distinct but interconnected narrative practices. We develop a dynamic model linking the simultaneous mobilization of these practices to strategy makers’ ability to harness the persistent tension between novelty and familiarity in a transformative change, and thereby win endorsement from key audiences.

Managerial Summary
How can storytelling be used to influence acceptance of an ongoing organizational transformation? In this paper, we try to answer this question by examining how, over three decades, Italian company Alessi documented its transformation from a manufacturer of kitchen steel utensils to a producer of a variety of household objects purchased also for their symbolic value. The leader behind Alessi's transformation, Alberto Alessi, orchestrated such narrative production, targeting employees, customers, retailers, and visitors to Alessi exhibitions. Our findings uncover how narratives can be used to win audiences’ endorsement of change, through narrative practices aimed at: (1) constructing a collective memory of change; (2) depicting change as a novel but coherent departure from the past; and (3) portraying change as a transcendent endeavor.

Hypernarrativity, Storytelling, and the Relativity of Truth: Digital Semiotics of Communication and Interaction

The arrival of “new media” such as the Web and multimedia mobile devices is transforming “old media” such as television. If we consider that these new media coexist with the old ones in the same system, then it could be a valid exercise to analyze the contaminations between them. In this article, I analyze the aesthetics of new audiovisual productions-–i.e., the acceleration of rhythm, the multiplication of characters and narrative programs—and the transformations of the television interface in order to identify the pertinent traits of what I define as hypertelevision. The article concludes with a reflection on the simulation of interactive experiences in contemporary television.

The Grammar of Hypertelevision: An Identikit of Convergence-Age Fiction Television (Or, How Television Simulates New Interactive Media)

As ‘the principal storyteller in contemporary American society’ (Kozloff 1992: 67) — as well as in many other contemporary societies — television is replete with narrative forms and genres. It is not only ‘the sitcom, the action series, the cartoon, the soap opera, the miniseries, the made-for-TV movie’ (ibid.: 68) that clearly show narrative traits. Even types of programmes which appear to be far less likely as narratives — such as advertisements, music videos or nature documentaries — often tell a story, though these stories admittedly vary considerably in terms of how elaborate they are: 
A commercial for pain relievers may rely on comparison and argument, or an ad for a car may be abstract and descriptive, but a vast number of advertisements offer a compressed narrative exemplifying the products’ beneficial effects. Music videos often enact the storyline of the song’s lyrics. Nature documentaries tend to follow the story of the animal’s life cycle or of the seasonal progression in a geographical area. Introduction: Towards a Narratology of TV Series

In the context of a systematic overview of the possibilities of applying narratological concepts to a study of TV series, ten case studies are explored in depth, demonstrating how series such as 24, Buffy, Twin Peaks, Star Trek, Blackadder , and Sex and the City make use of innovative audiovisual means of storytelling. Transgressing the traditional confines of narrative theory, the chapter authors address the question of how form, content, and function intersect in these series.

Diese Schwerpunktsetzung innerhalb der feministischen Erzahltextanalyse war nicht zuletzt dadurch bedingt, dass sich die beiden Begrunderinnen dieses Ansatzes, Susan Lanser und Robyn Warhol, primar mit Fragen der erzahlerischen Vermittlung auseinander gesetzt haben. Ausgehend von der Beobachtung, dass sich die anglo-amerikanisch gepragte feministische Literaturkritik seit den 1960er Jahren beinahe ausschlieslich auf die story/histoire-Ebene konzentrierte, pladieren sowohl Lanser als auch Warhol in ihren Schriften wiederholt fur die Notwendigkeit, neben inhaltlichen und ideologischen Fragen, also dem ›Was‹ der Erzahlung, auch formale Fragen, also das ›Wie‹ der Erzahlung, zu berucksichtigen. So stellt Lanser in ihrem grundlegenden Essay »Toward a Feminist Narratology« (1986) die erzahlerische Vermittlung in den Vordergrund. Spater widmet sie eine Monographie (Lanser 1992) ganz dem Themenbereich der ›Stimme‹ (voice), wobei sie die besondere (auch ideologische) Bedeutung dieser Kategorie fur die Narratologie im Allgemeinen und fur die feministische Erzahltextanalyse im Speziellen hervorhebt: »[F]emale voice […] is a site of ideological tension made visible in textual practices« (ebd., S. 6).

In jungeren Arbeiten aus dem Bereich der gender-orientierten Erzahltheorie zeichnet sich eine bemerkenswerte Erweiterung des Gegenstandsbereichs ab. Diese besteht erstens in der Tendenz, den Kategorien der histoire/story-Ebene (d.h. Zeit, Raum, Plot und Figuren) mehr Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken, als dies in den fruhen, feministisch-narratologischen Studien in der Regel der Fall war. Dem Beispiel der programmatischen Artikel von Susan Lanser (»Toward a Feminist Narratology«) und Robyn Warhol (»Toward a Theory of the Engaging Narrator: Earnest Interventions in Gaskell, Stowe, and Eliot«) aus dem Jahr 1986 folgend, lag der Fokus von Veroffentlichungen aus dem Bereich der feministischen Narratologie zunachst v.a. auf der recit/discourse-Ebene, also auf einer Untersuchung von Implikationen der Kategorien sex, gender und sexuality fur Erzahlinstanzen und fiktive Adressatinnen (vgl. Kap. I; vgl. auch den Uberblick in Allrath 2000). Begrundet war diese Schwerpunktsetzung nicht zuletzt in dem Ziel, die histoire-Zenmertheh der traditionellen feministischen Literaturwissenschaft zu korrigieren. Neuere Arbeiten aus dem Bereich der gender-orientierten Erzahltextanalyse wenden sich nun verstarkt der histoire zu — freilich, anders als die traditionelle feministische Literaturwissenschaft, mit einem inhaltlichen und zugleich narratologischen Erkenntnisinteresse.
