There was a serious discussion on Reliability Engineering for the Future during the European Conference on Safety and Reliability held at Copenhagen, in June 1992. The panellists discussed the current state-of-art and critically examined the shortcomings of present models, practices, methodologies and approaches in the context of dependability engineering. The editor's motivation to put these thoughts into a detailed logical and meaningful presentation of involved problems in the form of a book came as a consequence of this event. This stocktaking will guide and channelize the on-going efforts and the future developments in the area of system reliability evaluation.

CHAPTER 1 - Part-II: New Trends in System Reliability Evaluation

Safety of technical systems are becoming more and more important nowadays. Fault trees and minimal cut sets are usually used to attack the problems of assessing safety-critical systems. A visualization system named ViSSaAn, consisting of a matrix view, is proposed that supports an ecient safety analysis based on the information from these techniques. Interactions such as zooming and grouping are provided to support the task of finding the safety problems from the analysis information. An example based on real data shows the usefulness of ViSSaAn.

Risikoanalysen werden fur technische Anlagen durchgefuhrt, die eine erhebliche Gefahrdung ihrer Umgebung hervorrufen konnen. Grund dafur ist in der Regel, das in ihnen Materialien verwendet werden, die durch toxische oder radioaktive Wirkungen oder durch Energiefreisetzung gesundheitliche und materielle Schaden verursachen konnen. Der Umfang von Risikountersuchungen kann recht unterschiedlich sein. Er last sich in drei Bereiche unterteilen: 

Bereich 1:

Analyse der Betriebs- und Sicherheitssysteme der Anlage;




Bereich 2:

zusatzlich zu den Untersuchungen der Betriebs- und Sicherheitssysteme wird die Belastung der Ruckhaltebarrieren in der Anlage analysiert;




Bereich 3:

zusatzlich zu den Untersuchungen des Bereichs 2 werden die Unfallfolgen ermittelt.

Methoden der Risikoanalyse

Risk analyses are performed for technical installations which potentially cause major hazards to their environment. Such hazards usually derive from the use of substances which, through toxic or radioactive effects or the release of energy, can have a detrimental effect on health and damage property. The scope of risk analyses can vary. It can be divided into three levels [1]: 

Level 1:

Analysis of the operating and safety systems of the plant.




Level 2:

In addition to the analysis of level 1, potential loads on containments of the plant are assessed.




Level 3:

In addition to the investigations of level 2, the consequences of accidents are determined.
