This article is devoted to the perturbative renormalization of the abelian Higgs-Kibble model, within the class of renormalizable gauges which are odd under charge conjugation. The Bogoliubov Parasiuk Hepp-Zimmermann renormalization scheme is used throughout, including the renormalized action principle proved by Lowenstein and Lam. The whole study is based on the fulfillment to all orders of perturbation theory of the Slavnov identities which express the invariance of the Lagrangian under a supergauge type family of non-linear transformations involving the Faddeev-Popov ghosts. Direct combinatorial proofs are given of the gauge independence and unitarity of the physicalS operator. Their simplicity relies both on a systematic use of the Slavnov identities as well as suitable normalization conditions which allow to perform all mass renormalizations, including those pertaining to the ghosts, so that the theory can be given a setting within a fixed Fock space. Some simple gauge independent local operators are constructed.

The relevant methods are discussed in field theoretical models from simple scalar theories to non-Abelian gauge theories including gravity. In the simpler models, the aim is to give a pedagogical account of some of the relevant problems and their resolution, while in the more complicated but also more interesting models such as quantum chromodynamics, a summary of the results obtained so far is given together with references to a few of the most recent developments and open problems.

Advances in perturbative thermal field theory

The progress of the last decade in perturbative quantum field theory at high temperature and density made possible by the use of effective field theories and hard-thermal/dense-loop resummations in ultrarelativistic gauge theories is reviewed. The relevant methods are discussed in field theoretical models from simple scalar theories to non-Abelian gauge theories including gravity. In the simpler models, the aim is to give a pedagogical account of some of the relevant problems and their resolution, while in the more complicated but also more interesting models such as quantum chromodynamics, a summary of the results obtained so far are given together with references to a few most recent developments and open problems.

The all-order construction of the pinch technique gluon self-energy and quark?gluon vertex is presented in detail within the class of linear covariant gauges. The main ingredients in our analysis are the identification of a special Green function, which serves as a common kernel to all self-energy and vertex diagrams, and the judicious use of the Slavnov?Taylor identity it satisfies. In particular, it is shown that the ghost-Green functions appearing in this identity capture precisely the result of the pinching action at arbitrary order. By virtue of this observation the construction of the quark?gluon vertex becomes particularly compact. It turns out that the aforementioned ghost-Green functions play a crucial role, their net effect being the non-trivial modification of the ghost diagrams of the quark?gluon vertex in such a way as to reproduce dynamically the characteristic ghost sector of the background field method. The gluon self-energy is also constructed following two different procedures. First, an indirect derivation is given, by resorting to the strong induction method and the assumption of the uniqueness of the S-matrix. Second, an explicit construction based on the intrinsic pinch technique is provided, using the Slavnov?Taylor identity satisfied by the all-order three-gluon vertex nested inside the self-energy diagrams. The process independence of the gluon self-energy is also demonstrated, by using gluons instead of quarks as external test particles, and identifying the corresponding kernel function, together with its Slavnov?Taylor identity. Finally, the general methodology for carrying out the renormalization of the resulting Green functions is outlined, and various open questions are briefly discussed.

Pinch technique self-energies and vertices to all orders in perturbation theory

An improved and generalized version of a recent proof of equivalence forS-matrices obtained in the background field method and in conventional quantization procedures is proposed. Furthermore, it is shown explicitly that theS-matrix is independent of the additional arbitrary gauge breaking term for the background field. In addition, the axial gauges as background field gauges are discussed briefly.
