The distributions of stresses and deflection in rectangular isotropic, orthotropic and laminated composite plates with central circular hole under transverse static loading have been studied using finite element method. The aim of author is to analyze the effect of D/A ratio (where D is hole diameter and A is plate width) upon stress concentration factor (SCF) and deflection in isotropic, orthotropic and laminated composite plates under different transverse static loading condition. Analysis has been done for symmetric and anti-symmetric composite laminates. The results are obtained for three different boundary conditions. The variations of SCF and deflection with respect to D/A ratio are presented in graphical form and discussed. The finite element formulation is carried out in the analysis section of the ANSYS package.

Finite element analysis for stress concentration and deflection in isotropic, orthotropic and laminated composite plates with central circular hole under transverse static loading

Strain and stress concentrations are studied for elastomers at finite deformations. Effects of strain-induced crystallization, filler reinforcement and deformation rate are also investigated, and micromechanical descriptions are provided for the observed results. A simple problem is subjected to finite element simulations to show the results evidently. Material parameters are obtained from experimental tests conducted on standard tensile samples of filled and unfilled natural rubber (NR) as well as styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) as crystallizing and non-crystallizing rubbers, respectively. In all simulations, the strain concentration factor \(K_E\) is shown to decrease monotonically where the reduction is more apparent as the filler content increases. At enough large stretches, \(K_E\) is higher for filled NRs compared to the unfilled NR which is not the case for SBR. The stress concentration factor \(K_S\) rises sharply by deformation of the samples. At large stretches, in the case of SBR, filler reinforcement only shifts the maximum value of \(K_S\) to a lower level of strain, while in the case of NR, it reduces \(K_S\) significantly. It is concluded that \(K_S\) can rise from its theoretical value remarkably which should be noticed in design purposes particularly for crystallizing elastomers. Furthermore, the effect of deformation rate is investigated employing a visco-hyperelastic constitutive law along with an associated VUMAT in ABAQUS/Explicit. It is observed that, at high deformation rates, \(K_E\) decreases. Despite the reduction in strain concentration, \(K_S\) would be higher which is not desired in design of mechanical parts.

Theoretical stress concentration factors for short flat bars with opposite U-shaped notches subjected to in-plane bending

A comprehensive plane stress finite element study is made for reduction of stress concentration factor (SCF) in a uni-axially loaded infinite width rectangular isotropic/orthotropic plate with central circular hole. The finite element formulation was carried out by the analysis section of the package ANSYS. With the help of present work, stress concentration can be reduced up to 24.4 % in an isotropic and 31 % in an orthotropic plate by introducing four coaxial auxiliary holes on either side of main hole. The study reveals that the introduction of these holes helps to smooth flow of the tensile stress past the main hole and result a reduction in stress concentration factor. With such reduction in maximum stress levels, the improvement in fatigue life of a component can be significant.

The D/A ratio is varied from 0.01 to 0.9. The analysis is done for plates of isotropic and two different orthotropic materials. The results are obtained for three different boundary conditions. Analysis of Stress Concentration and Deflectionin Isotropic and Orthotropic Rectangular Plates with Central Circular Hole under Transverse Static Loading

This work shows that the theoretical stress concentration factor depends on the length of the member in addition to the established other standard geometric parameters. In particular, the in-plane theoretical stress concentration factors for short rectangular plates with centered circular holes subjected to uniform tension are determined using the finite element method. It is shown that these factors can reach significantly larger values than the corresponding existing ones for long plates. The value of the transition length between long and short plates is computed and reported as well. Two new concepts are defined, short members and transition length.
