We report on the growth of large-size phenolic configurationally locked polyene OH1 (2-(3-(4-hydroxystyryl)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-enylidene)malononitrile) organic bulk crystals. OH1 has been recently identified as very promising for electro-optic and THz-wave applications, with several advantages compared to the benchmark ionic salts such as DAST (4′-dimethylamino-N-methyl-4-stilbazolium tosylate) and DSTMS (4-N,N-dimethylamino-4′-N′-methyl-stilbazolium 2,4,6-trimethylbenzene sulfonate). We investigate the thermodynamic equilibrium conditions, the solubility, and the metastable zone of OH1/methanol system. The intermolecular hydrogen-bond interactions between the OH1 and methanol molecules impede the main supramolecular interactions between the OH1 molecules, which results in a strong delay in nucleation and provides a very large metastable-zone width. Synthesis, crystal growth and characterization of an efficient nonlinear optical D-π-A type single crystal: 2-Aminopyridinium 4-nitrophenolate 4-nitrophenol

Optical nonlinearity of metal complexes of p-nitrophenolate (M=Li, Na and K) in ethanol is studied by using a continuous wave (cw) diode pumped Nd:YAG laser (532 nm, 50 mW). The predominant mechanism of observed nonlinearity is thermal in origin. The nonlinear refractive index and the nonlinear absorption coefficient of the samples were found to be in the order of 10 −8  cm 2 /W and 10 −3  cm/W respectively. Magnitude of third-order optical parameters varies according to the choice of alkali metal chosen for metal complex formation of p-nitrophenolate. The third-order nonlinear susceptibility was found to be in the order of 10 −6  esu. The observed saturable absorption and the self-defocusing effect were used to demonstrate the optical limiting action at 532 nm by using the same cw laser beam.

Third order nonlinear optical properties and optical limiting behavior of alkali metal complexes of p-nitrophenol

Crystals of acentric α-resorcinol (space group Pna21, point group mm2), grown from the vapor phase, present a wide range of morphological forms. Increase in supersaturation (σ) yields, successively, prismatic (σ ∼ 0.001), columnar (σ ∼ 0.003), needlelike (σ ∼ 0.005), and, finally, hexagonal platelike (σ > 0.007) morphologies. This change in habit is achieved principally by extension in the [001] polar direction. No observable continuous growth occurs on the (011) and (011) faces presenting in the [001] direction. Similar platelike morphologies and absence of growth in the [001] direction are reported for crystals grown from aqueous solutions at the highest supersaturations (σ > 0.01). Growth from aqueous solution at lower supersaturations could not be studied with the growth method used due to the low growth rates of all crystal faces under these conditions.
