The study on genetic parameters of 74 cluster bean genotypes collected from different parts of the country revealed, high estimates of variation for number of branches (90 DAS), number of clusters per plant, number of pods per cluster, pod length, pod weight, vegetable pod yield per plant, pod yield per plot, pod yield per hectare, dry pod yield per plant, weight of ten dry pods, seed yield per plant, seed yield per plot and gum content of seed endosperm The high estimates of heritability coupled with high values of genetic advance over mean (GAM) were noticed for traits like, plant height (cm) (90 DAS), number of branches (90 DAS), number of clusters per plant, pod length, pod weight, pubescence, seed yield per plant, seed yield per plot and seed gum content. These outcomes showed prevalence of additive constituents for these characters and hence for improving these traits by direct selection method would be more effective.

Genetic variability studies in cluster bean [Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.] for growth, yield and quality parameters

Fifty genotypes of cluster bean [ Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub] were evaluated to estimate variability, broad sense heritability and genetic advance for pod yield and related attributes, during Kharif 2008. High estimates of GCV and PCV were recorded for number of branches per plant, number of clusters per plant, number of pods per cluster, fresh pod yield, dry pod yield, 100 seed weight and gum content. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was observed for plant height, number of branches per plant, number of clusters per plant, number of pods per cluster, pod length, fresh pod yield per plant, dry pod yield per plant, seed yield per plant, 100 seed weight, days taken to maturity, crude protein and gum content. High heritability with low genetic advance was observed for the trait, days taken to maturity. The results of the present investigation suggests that plant height, number of branches per plant, number of clusters per plant, number of pods per cluster, pod length, fresh pod yield per plant, dry pod yield per plant, seed yield per plant, 100 seed weight, days taken to maturity, crude protein and gum content had predominance of additive gene action and hence selection is more effective.

Variability, Heritability and Genetic Advance in Cluster Bean [ Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub]

An experiment was conducted to assess the genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance as percent of mean for yield and quality attributing traits in vegetable type cluster bean at the Department of Horticulture, University Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Bengaluru, Karnataka. All the tested genotypes showed the existence of large amount of variability for most of the characters. The phenotypic variance was higher than genotypic variance for all the characters studied. High heritability coupled with high GAM was observed for the characters like number of leaves, branches, pods per plant, clusters per plant, pod length, yield per plant this indicates the influence of additive gene action for these traits. None of the characters recorded low heritability, but total chlorophyll content recorded low high genetic advance with high heritability.

Twenty six genotypes of cluster bean [Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub] were evaluated to estimate variability, broad sense heritability and genetic advance for pod yield and related attributes, during Rabi 2017. High estimates of GCV and PCV were recorded for number of branches per plant, plant spread at final harvest, fresh pod yield per plant, pod yield per plot, pod yield per hectare, number of pods per cluster, TSS and protein. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean was observed for number of branches per plant, plant spread, number of pods per cluster, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, days taken to pod maturity, pod length, TSS, protein %, fibre % and moisture %. High heritability with low genetic advance was observed for days to 50% flowering and days to first harvest. The results of the present investigation suggests that number of branches per plant, plant spread, number of pods per cluster, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, days taken to pod maturity, pod length, TSS, protein %, fibre % and moisture % had predominance of additive gene action and hence selection is more effective. Studies on Genetic Variability, Heritability and Genetic Advance for Yield and Yield Attributing Characters in Cluster Bean [Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.]

The present investigation entitled “Influence of foliar spraying of Seaweed extract and Humic acid on growth, yield and quality of Strawberry (Fragaria × ananasa duch) cv. Winter dawn” was carried out in the Department of Horticulture, Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture Technology & Sciences Prayagraj. This experiment was conducted from November 2022 to March 2023. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the best treatment combination of Seaweed Extract and Humic acid concentration for producing the best quality strawberry. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Design having 9 treatments and replicated 3 times. The T9 (SWE @ 8000ppm + Humic acid @ 3.0 g/L) recorded highest values in terms of growth parameters i.e. number of leaves (7.83, 15.58, 23.66, 30.08), plant height (7.88, 12.21, 15.25, 18.06), plant spread (13.38 E-W, 13.41 N-S; 15.4 E-W, 15.43 N-S; 21.55 E-W, 21.01 N-S; 24.44 E-W, 24.45 N-S) at different stages of growth i.e 30, 60, 90, and 120 days after planting as compared to T1 (control) and all other treatments. Plant treatment T9 also recorded earliest flowering (48.42 days) and earliest fruiting (70.42). Fruit weight (30.84g), fruit length (5.84cm) and diameter (4.05cm) were found superior followed by T8 (SWE @ 7000ppm + Humic acid @ 3.0 g/L). Higher yield (343.52g) and higher number fruits per pant (20.66) were observed in T9 and the lower yield and less number of fruits per plant in T1 (control). In Fruit quality characters, higher TSS (11.13ᴼB), lower acidity (0.58%) and high amount of ascorbic acid (60.16 mg/100 g) was observed in T9 followed by T8. Higher concentrations of seaweed extract and humic acid have been found to have a more significant positive impact on the yield quality of strawberries, demonstrating their superiority in enhancing crop productivity.
