A number of modeling techniques used in conjunction with these numerical methods, which make the entire simulation process more manageable, are described briefly followed by an assessment of each method. The methods covered are: finite difference. finite element, boundary element TLM, method of lines, integral equation, moment, Galerkin's mode matching, spectral domain, and generalized scattering matrix. >

This paper presents a number of numerical techniques used for characterization and modeling of passive components for microwave and millimeter-wave circuits. Brief descriptions are provided for each technique with discussions on advantages, limitation, typical structures amenable to the method, and cautions to be exercised where appropriate. The text is intended to serve as a tutorial. Representative publications on each topic are included in the reference list.

An overview on numerical techniques for modeling miniaturized passive components

A number of numerical methods are described that have been developed for the characterization, modeling, and design of microwave and millimeter-wave passive structures. Emphasis is on planar and quasiplanar structures. The methods are presented roughly in order of increasing analytical complexity and correspondingly decreasing versatility. The ten methods reviewed are: the finite-difference method, the transmission-line matrix method, the finite-element method, the boundary-element method, the method of moments, the mode-matching technique, the transverse-resonance technique, the spectral-domain method, the method of lines, and the planar circuit approach. Specific advantages and disadvantages in terms of versatility, accuracy, computer time, and memory are discussed. Typical structures are illustrated as representative examples of the methods described. >

Numerical methods for passive components

The authors code the algorithms for two electromagnetic codes, the Numerical Electromagnetic Code (NEC) and the Finite Difference Time Domain Code (FDTD), for the Mark III Hypercube. The execution times for these codes are evaluated. For both codes large speedup factors are found when runs on 32 nodes are compared to runs on one node and to runs on a VAX 11/750. The accuracy of these codes is verified by comparisons with versions running on sequential machines and with published results. >
