In this work, a previously proposed Enhanced Assumed Strain (EAS) finite element formulation for thin shells is revised and extended to account for isotropic and anisotropic material non-linearities Transverse shear and membrane-locking patterns are successfully removed from the displacement-based formulation The resultant EAS shell finite element does not rely on any other mixed formulation, since the enhanced strain field is designed to fulfil the null transverse shear strain subspace coming from the classical degenerated formulation At the same time, a minimum number of enhanced variables is achieved, when compared with previous works in the field Non-linear effects are treated within a local reference frame affected by the rigid-body part of the total deformation Additive and multiplicative update procedures for the finite rotation degrees-of-freedom are implemented to correctly reproduce mid-point configurations along the incremental deformation path, improving the overall convergence rate The stress and strain tensors update in the local frame, together with an additive treatment of the EAS terms, lead to a straightforward implementation of non-linear geometric and material relations Accuracy of the implemented algorithms is shown in isotropic and anisotropic elasto-plastic problems Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

Limit-cycle oscillations, as they appear in high-performance e ghter aircraft, remain an area of scrutiny by the aerospace community. Tools for the simulation and prediction of the onset for limit-cycle oscillations have maturedsignie cantly.Surprisingly,lessprogresshasbeenmadeinactivecontrolmethodologiesfortheseinherently nonlinear dynamic phenomena. Even in the cases where it is known that limit-cycle oscillations may be observed in particular e ight regimes, and active control methodologies are employed to attenuate response, there are very few analytical results that characterize the stability of the closed-loop system. In part, this may be attributed to the dife culty in understanding the nature of the contributing nonlinear structural and nonlinear aerodynamic interactions that account for the motion. Recent progress made by the authors in the derivation, development, and implementation of nonlinear control methodologies appropriate for a class of e utter problems is reviewed. Both analytical and experimentalresultsaresummarized. Directionsforfuture study and, in particular,remaining technical barriers that must be overcome, are summarized.

Nonlinear Control Methods for High-Energy Limit-Cycle Oscillations

This paper shows an approach to computing the effective properties of multi-field composite materials and their first-order sensitivities. The approach is based on the application of the complex variable step method for the micromechanical Mori–Tanaka scheme; hence, the first-order sensitivities can be computed in the same analysis. Numerical results are presented for magnetoelectroelastic properties of piezoelectric–piezomagnetic composite materials. A comparison of the results to those obtained by other methods shows that the presented sensitivity analysis gives highly accurate and stable results, but the values of the results are dependent on the applied micromechanical model. The presented approach may be used to solve ill-posed problems of optimal design or identification in coupled fields micromechanics.

Complex variable step method for sensitivity analysis of effective properties in multi-field micromechanics

A linear modelling of aeroacoustic waves propagation is discussed. The first point is an existence and uniqueness theorem. But restrictive assumptions are required on the velocity of the flow. Then a counter example proves that they are necessary.

Existence and uniqueness of a solution to an aeroacoustic model

Comparative results of investigating the parameters of plasmas generated by atmospheric-pressure electric-arc plasmatrons of two types operating in the regime of simultaneous partial oxidation of hydrocarbons and their pyrolysis, have been given. It has been established by spectral and thermophysical measurements that the component composition of the plasma and its thermal characteristics at exit from a d.c. plasmatron significantly differ from the parameters of a plasmatron of the second type — an a.c. plasmatron with rail-shaped electrodes of the gliding-arc type. The temperature nonequilibrium and the presence of the carbon dimers C2 in the plasma (in the absence of the monomer C) generated by the rail-shaped-electrode plasmatron point to the fact that realization of the synthesis of fullerene-containing particles and, probably, particles containing nanotubes is, in principle, possible in reactors based on it, just as in more energy-intensive reactors with low-voltage d.c. arc plasmatrons.
