Wide-scale adoption and projected growth of electric vehicles (EVs) necessitate research and development of power electronic converters to achieve high power, low-cost, and reliable charging solutions for the EV battery. This paper presents a comprehensive review of EV off-board chargers that consist of ac-dc and dc-dc power stages from the power network to the EV battery. Although EV chargers are categorized into two types, namely, on-board and off-board chargers, it is essential to utilize off-board chargers for dc fast and ultra-fast charging so that volume and weight of EV can be reduced significantly. Here, we discuss the state-of-the-art topologies and control methods of both ac-dc and dc-dc power stages for off-board chargers, focusing on technical details, ongoing progress, and challenges. In addition, most of the recent multiport EV chargers integrating PV, energy storage, EV, and grid are presented. Moreover, comparative analysis has been carried out for the topologies and the control schemes of ac-dc rectifiers, dc-dc converters, and multiport converters in terms of architecture, power and voltage levels, efficiency, bidirectionality, control variables, advantages, and disadvantages which can be used as a guideline for future research directions in EV charging solutions.

Lithium-ion batteries are the most commonly used battery type in commercial electric vehicles due to their high energy densities and ability to be repeatedly charged and discharged over many cycles. In order to maximize the efficiency of a li-ion battery pack, a stable temperature range between 15 °C to 35 °C must be maintained. As such, a reliable and robust battery thermal management system is needed to dissipate heat and regulate the li-ion battery pack’s temperature. This paper reviews how heat is generated across a li-ion cell as well as the current research work being done on the four main battery thermal management types which include air-cooled, liquid-cooled, phase change material based and thermo-electric based systems. Additionally, the strengths and weaknesses of each battery thermal management type is reviewed in this study. It was determined that air cooled systems are suited for short-distance travel electric vehicles, liquid cooled are for electric vehicles that require long-distance travel, larger battery packs and for high thermal loads, phase change material based are for electric vehicles with constant thermal loads and stable ambient temperatures and thermo-electric battery thermal management systems are best best suited in conjunction with the other types for better control. 

Review of battery thermal management systems in electric vehicles

Electrification of vehicles is one of the most promising measures for decarbonising the transport system. Several countries worldwide have implemented policy incentives to promote mass electric vehicle (EV) adoption to mitigate the environmental and energy-related challenges caused by the increased demand for road transportation. As a result, the number of EVs on the road is growing in several countries. However, despite the growing demand, many consumers are still sceptical about EVs. The aim of this study is to evaluate consumers' EV repurchase intention by using an extended theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Studies on EV adoption have found TPB determinants of intention to be relevant. Additionally, this study argues that the effects of satisfaction should be considered in addition to the TPB elements to better understand repurchase intentions. Consequently, this study includes EV users' satisfaction with relevant aspects such as range-recharge, environmental attributes, cost, availability, symbolic attributes, and use-based policy measures. A structural equation model (SEM) was established to analyse a survey dataset consisting of 278 Norwegian EV owners. To assess satisfaction with EV use and the behavioural intention of EV repurchases, only the responses from actual EV users were studied. This is important because consumers with no prior experience with EVs tend to inaccurately portray their interest in a new product or service. The findings are of interest for both policymakers and EV manufacturers seeking to gain actionable insights into EV owners' needs and perceptions concerning EV attributes, thus developing and implementing better strategies to increase EV attractiveness and performance.

The study aims to understand the general perception of electric vehicles among consumers and the barriers to their widespread adoption. The study focuses on identifying and understanding the factors involved in their purchase with a wider range of expression using thematic analysis unlike traditional survey techniques. Further, the role of emotions is also considered in the study which is normally overlooked. eWOM is used as data for the study as it is relevant for electric vehicles as people majorly use internet mediums to freely share their thoughts. This method helps in finding all gaps (tangible and intangible) present in the offering (EVs) and expectations of a consumer. This study also provides us with information on relationships amongst these barriers which has a negative cascading effect on overall adoption.
