We compare two representative streaming systems using mesh-based and multiple tree-based overlay routing through deployments on the PlanetLab wide-area experimentation platform. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to compare streaming overlay architectures in real Internet settings, considering not only intuitive aspects such as scalability and performance under churn, but also less studied factors such as bandwidth and latency heterogeneity of overlay participants. Overall, our study indicates that mesh-based systems are superior for nodes with high bandwidth capabilities and low round trip times, while multi-tree based systems currently cope better with stringent real time deadlines under heterogeneous conditions.

Hybrid error recovery protocol for video streaming in vehicle ad hoc networks

Latency is key in today cellular networks. The latest 3GPP Release 14 includes a future work item to shorten the Transmission Time Interval of LTE networks from 1ms to 0.5ms in order to lower the overall system latency. Towards achieving such goal, this paper proposes a mechanism to reduce the latency of mobile cellular systems, while improving the throughput, by leveraging the benefits of the two modalities of operation of the Radio Link Control (RLC) protocol, namely Unacknowledgment Mode (UM) and Acknowledgment Mode (AM). By analyzing and comparing the performance of RLC in UM and AM in the presence of difference network conditions, a novel mechanism is proposed which introduces an adaptive RLC mode which dynamically alternates between UM and AM according to the real-time analysis of radio conditions. The mechanism aims to improve system latency, reduce processing power and improve throughput by enabling UM, while, on the other hand, increase data reliability when radio conditions degrade by activating AM. This approach minimizes the system delay by reducing layer 2 overhead and complexity whilst maintaining data reliability.

Dynamic RLC mode based upon link adaptation to reduce latency and improve throughput in cellular networks

In this thesis, the impact of packet losses on the quality of received videos sent across a network that exhibit normal network perturbations such as jitters, delays, packet drops etc has been examined. Dynamic behavior of a normal network has been simulated using Linux and the Network Emulator (NetEm). Peoples’ perceptions on the quality of the received video were used in rating the qualities of several videos with differing speeds. In accordance with ITU’s guideline of using Mean Opinion Scores (MOS), the effects of packet drops were analyzed. Excel and Matlab were used as tools in analyzing the peoples’ opinions which indicates the impacts that different loss rates has on the transmitted videos. Statistical methods used for evaluation of data are mean and variance. We conclude that people have convergence of opinions when losses become extremely high on videos with highly variable scene changes

Impact of Packet Losses on the Quality of Video Streaming

Universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) is a third-generation mobile communication system that supports wireless wideband multimedia communications. This paper investigates the performance of streaming MPEG-4 video over UMTS dedicated channels with varying channel conditions. In order to evaluate the performance, simulation models for UMTS and MPEG-4 were developed. Simulation results show that UMTS radio control link (RLC) protocol operating in the acknowledged mode outperforms the unacknowledged mode. The latter mode provides timely delivery but no error recovery. The acknowledged mode can deliver acceptable video quality for RLC block error rates up to 40% utilizing a pre-decoder buffer. We also discover that RLC block size can affect the video quality with a larger RLC block size attaining better quality. However, the optimum RLC block size is dependent on the encoded video frame size and the channel bit rate. Therefore, the RLC block size can be tuned to a proper value given the encoded video frame size and channel bit rate.
