Abstract Using radioisotope markers the distribution coefficients (Kd) of the following elements In, Sn, Sb, Te, Bi, Co, Fe, Nb, Sr, Ba, Ag, Cd, Zr, Hf and Ti were determined with different concentrations of HCl, H2SO4 and HNO3 for the extraction chromatographic resin Uranium and TEtraValent Actinides (UTEVA). This data can be used for separation of elements in complex mixtures, as well as for correct assessment of the elements chemistry with higher valences such as 3, 4, 5 or 6.

The present work is an attempt to correlate the composition and some physico-chemical properties of two-phase systems with the stationary phase retention in a coil planet centrifuge of J-type. Complex liquid systems containing an organic solvent (n-decane or chloroform), an extracting reagent (di-2-ethylhexylphosphoric acid, D2EHPA), water and a mineral salt (ammonium sulphate) are considered.

Influence of Composition and Some Physico-Chemical Properties of Two-Phase Liquid Systems On the Stationary Phase Retention in a Coil Planet Centrifuge

Impregnation behaviors of reverse-phase silica materials and C18-silica HPLC columns were studied using di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (HDEHP) as a model extractant. Initially, the adsorption efficiency of the ligand on different types of bulk particles was investigated using various concentration of HDEHP in different composition of methanol/water mixtures based on a batch technique. Subsequently, impregnation of HPLC columns was performed using the dynamic flow-through technique. The experimental data fitted well to the Langmuir model and the adsorption isotherms from the flow-through experiment were used to prepare extraction columns of different ligand densities. Finally, the impregnated columns were characterized and validated through HPLC separation of the lanthanides.

The main performance characteristics of an extraction-chromatographic stationary phase may be collected within retention, selectivity, and physical stability. The chapter also presents a systematic survey of the extractants used as stationary phases, such as acidic extracts. Acidic extractants are organic compounds that have acid groups in their molecules. They are often called “liquid cation exchangers” because their behavior can be easily related to that exhibited by cation-exchange resins.
