This paper considers the economy and reliability of the microgrid cluster system, and proposes a bi-level optimized operation strategy for the microgrid cluster, which aims to improve the economic benefits of the microgrid cluster and reduce the operating risk of microgrid. The upper layer takes the microgrid cluster as the research object, with the goal of minimizing the total operating cost of the system, and establishes the optimal model of the microgrid cluster. The lower layer takes the sub-microgrid as the research object, and establishes the microgrid optimization model with the goal of optimal operating cost and operating risk index. The method of combining mixed integer linear programming and IABC algorithm is used to solve the multi-objective bi-level optimization model, and to provide decision makers with two microgrid dispatching schemes with different focuses. Finally, an example is used to verify the effectiveness of the bi-level optimization strategy and improved algorithm proposed in this paper, as well as the practicability of the two dispatching schemes.

Design and experimental investigation of digital model predictive current controller for single phase grid integrated photovoltaic systems

Microgrid operations planning is one of the keys to ensuring the safe and efficient outputs of distributed energy resources (DERs) and the stable operation of a power system in a microgrid (MG). In this study, for the symmetry in renewable energy and microgrid systems, and coordinated control based on a storage battery system, an MG dispatching model with DER conditions and integrated costs is established in grid-connected mode, on the basis of MG operation costs, interaction costs, and pollutant emissions costs. Moreover, an optimization objective for minimizing integrated costs is established. Therefore, based on the original whale optimization algorithm (WOA), an improved whale optimization algorithm (IWOA) with adaptive weight strategy and Levy flight trajectory is proposed in this paper, to solve the optimal operations planning problem of MGs. Finally, in computing comparisons with methods such as the genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm algorithm (PSO), WOA, wild horse optimizer (WHO), and enhanced whale optimization algorithm (EWOA), the results show that the IWOA computation had lower integrated costs and higher operational efficiency. Moreover, it is verified that the IWOA performed better in solving the MG operations planning problem.

Improved Whale Optimization Algorithm for Solving Microgrid Operations Planning Problems

To become sustainable, the production of electricity has been oriented towards the adoption of local and renewable sources. Distributed electric and thermal energy generation is more suitable to avoid any possible waste, and the Micro Gas Turbine (MGT) can play a key role in this scenario. Due to the intrinsic properties and the high flexibility of operation of this energy conversion system, the exploitation of alternative fuels and the integration of the MGT itself with other energy conversion systems (solar field, ORC, fuel cells) represent one of the most effective strategies to achieve higher conversion efficiencies and to reduce emissions from power systems. The present work aims to review the results obtained by the researchers in the last years. The different technologies are analyzed in detail, both separately and under a more complete view, considering two or more solutions embedded in micro-grid configurations.

The shift from large-scale centralised energy systems to smaller scale decentralised systems based on Distributed Energy Resources (DER) is likely to cause a sector-wide replacement of current electricity management practices and business models—creating a new energy paradigm. If handled well, such a transition will not be inherently disruptive; however, it can cause major disruption if long-held views and assumptions are not rapidly reconsidered and renewed, and new supporting structures are not swiftly put in place—hence, if disruption is experienced it will be due to a lack of strategic responses rather than the nature of the technology. This paper clarifies the nature of DERs and outlines key issues and opportunities associated with a range of associated service configurations and business models. The paper outlines key factors affecting the viability of such approaches and identifies leverage points for accelerating uptake. The paper concludes by considering how shifting landscape factors and related opportunities in the coming decades will shape the transition to a decentralised energy system. This paper contains findings from research performed at the Renewable, Affordable, Clean Energy Cooperative Research Centre (RACE CRC) in Australia.

The Role of Distributed Energy Resources and Associated Business Models in the Decentralised Energy Transition: A Review

In the last years, technological innovations and changing economic and regulatory environments have resulted in a great interest for Distributed Generation (DG). DG concept covers local power generation at distribution level by using renewable or non-conventional generators. Distributed Energy Resources (DER) range from CHP (combined heat and power) systems based on Stirling engines, fuel cells and microturbines, to renewables like solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, wind energy conversion systems (WECS) and small scale hydroelectric generation. The use of biofuels and application of various storage technologies are also considered part of DG. In this paper, the state of the art of DG technologies and strategies - focusing on solar PV, wind and fuel cells - are analysed, benefits and drawbacks are discussed, future R&D prospects are presented.
