Advances in reflectarrays and array lenses with electronic beam-forming capabilities are enabling a host of new possibilities for these high-performance, low-cost antenna architectures. This paper reviews enabling technologies and topologies of reconfigurable reflectarray and array lens designs, and surveys a range of experimental implementations and achievements that have been made in this area in recent years. The paper describes the fundamental design approaches employed in realizing reconfigurable designs, and explores advanced capabilities of these nascent architectures, such as multi-band operation, polarization manipulation, frequency agility, and amplification. Finally, the paper concludes by discussing future challenges and possibilities for these antennas.

Reconfigurable Reflectarrays and Array Lenses for Dynamic Antenna Beam Control: A Review

The reflectarray has significant promise in applications requiring high-gain, low-profile reflectors. Recent advances in tuning technology have raised the possibility of realizing electronically tunable reflectarrays, which can dynamically adjust their radiation patterns. This paper presents an electronically tunable reflectarray based on elements tuned using varactor diodes. Modeling approaches based on an equivalent circuit representation and computational electromagnetics simulations are presented. Both techniques accurately predict the scattering characteristics of the unit cell as compared to experimental measurements. The development of a unit cell with over 320omicron of phase agility at 5.5 GHz is discussed. Finally, a 70-element electronically tunable reflectarray prototype operating at 5.8 GHz is presented. Radiation pattern measurements with the reflectarray demonstrate its dynamic beam-forming characteristics. Measurements of the gain of the reflectarray correlate well with theoretical expectations.

Modeling and Design of Electronically Tunable Reflectarrays

A detailed overview of various design methodologies and enabling technologies for beam-scanning reflectarray antennas is presented in this article. Numerous advantages of reflectarrays over reflectors and phased arrays are delineated, and representative beam-scanning reflectarray antenna designs are reviewed. For limited field-of-view beam-scanning systems, utilizing the reflector nature of the reflectarray antenna and the feed-tuning technique can provide a simple solution with good performance. On the other hand, for applications where wideangle scan coverage is required, utilizing the array nature of the reflectarray and the aperture phase-tuning approach are the more suitable choices. There are various enabling technologies available for both design methodologies, making them a suitable choice for the new generation of high-speed, high-gain beam-scanning antennas.

Beam-Scanning Reflectarray Antennas: A technical overview and state of the art.

An aperture-coupled reflectarray element giving a full phase tuning range with a single varactor diode is proposed in this paper for pattern reconfigurability applications. The full phase agility is achieved by a proper optimization of the phase tuning line, thus providing an alternate inductive/capacitive effect able to avoid the use of two varactor diodes, usually adopted in similar existing configurations. The proposed active element structure is adopted to design a demonstrative reflectarray prototype of 3 × 15 radiators. Furthermore, an own synthesis procedure is applied to obtain the proper biasing voltages giving the prescribed H-plane field. Test examples of beam-scanning, multibeam, and shaped-beam patterns are discussed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

Design and Validation of a Reconfigurable Single Varactor-Tuned Reflectarray

The paper describes a novel dipole reflectarray element with variable reflection phase. The element is described and array waveguide simulator measurement data demonstrating its phase shifting properties is presented. The element was developed originally as a mechanism for antenna pattern tuning of a fixed-beam crossed-dipole reflectarray. However, it might also be applied, using small electric motors, to achieve electronic scanning or active beam reshaping. These potential applications are discussed briefly.
