Receptor for advanced glycation end products (AGEs) has a central role in vessel wall interactions and gene activation in response to circulating AGE proteins
Ann Marie Schmidt,Mirela Hasu,Doina Popov,Jinghua Zhang,J Chen,Shi Du Yan,J Brett,Rong Cao,Keisuke Kuwabara,G. Costache +9 more
TL;DR: It is shown that AGE albumin in the intravascular space interacts with the vessel wall via binding to an integral membrane protein, receptor for AGE (RAGE), a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, resulting in clearance from the plasma and induction of interleukin 6 mRNA.

Pathobiochemistry of combined diabetes and atherosclerosis studied on a novel animal model. The hyperlipemic-hyperglycemic hamster.
Maya Simionescu,Doina Popov,A. Sima,Mirela Hasu,G. Costache,Silviu L. Faitar,A. Vulpanovici,Camelia S. Stancu,D. Stern,Natalia Simionescu +9 more
TL;DR: Diabetes accelerated the early development and progression of atherosclerotic lesions leading to rapid calcification, and hyperlipidemia associated with diabetes accelerated the rate of development of diabetes-induced microvascular disease.

Capillary and aortic endothelia interact in situ with nonenzymatically glycated albumin and develop specific alterations in early experimental diabetes.
TL;DR: Together, the results show that in diabetes there is enhanced vascular uptake of AGE-Alb and significant pathomorphological changes of micro- and macrovessels.

Beneficial effects of L-arginine supplementation in experimental hyperlipemia-hyperglycemia in the hamster.
TL;DR: The results indicate that endothelial dysfunction established in combined hyperlipemia-diabetes is distinctive for each vascular bed (mesenteric arterioles, heart capillaries, kidney glomerular capillary), and there is a reversible stage of the dysfunction in which L-arginine oral supplementation induced beneficial effects.

The effects of simultaneous hyperlipemia-hyperglycemia on the resistance arteries, myocardium and kidney glomeruli.
TL;DR: The experimental model of Golden Syrian hamster subjected to concomitant hyperlipemia (diet-induced) and diabetes (by streptozotocin injection) for 24 weeks is characterised by the prevalence of micro- and macroangiopathies.
