The Berle-Means thesis (1932) implies that diffuse ownership adversely affects firm performance. This paper tries to investigate whether there is strong evidence to support the notion that variations across firms in observed ownership structures result in systematic variations in observed firm performance. We test this hypothesis by assessing the impact of the structure of ownership on corporate performance, measured by profitability, using data for 175 Greek listed firms. Following Demsetz and Villalonga (2001) we model ownership structure, first, as an endogenous variable and, second, we consider two different measures of ownership structure reflecting different groups of shareholders with conflicting interests. Empirical findings suggest that a more concentrated ownership structure positively relates to higher firm profitability. We also find that higher firm profitability requires a less diffused ownership.

The abnormal returns associated with the announcements of rights issues is positive in Greece, where there is no active secondary market for rights but where stock ownership is concentrated in the hands of a few shareholders and rights issues are large relative to the existing common equity base.

This study employs GARCH type models and tests for their validity over an Emerging Capital Market, the Athens Stock Exchange Market (ASE). Correct specification, of the different models, implies that the Weak Efficient Market Hypothesis does not hold for ASE. There is strong empirical evidence that ASE follows a pattern where last period's daily returns are correlated with today's returns and current volatility is positively related to past realizations. Negative shocks have an asymmetric impact on the daily stock returns series and political instabilities increase volatility over time. The mean of the series does not change during high volatile periods.

Modelling volatility and testing for efficiency in emerging capital markets: the case of the Athens stock exchange

This study attempts to investigate whether corporate performance is affected by the ownership structure, using data from companies quoted on the Athens Stock Exchange for the period 1996–1998. Given such an objective, the basic hypothesis examined, is that corporate performance as measured by Tobin's Q ratio is a function of ownership and other control variables. Our econometric approach relies on the use of a combination of time series and cross section data (panel-data analysis), a procedure that avoids many statistical problems. After examining the role of each identifiable shareholder, we find a positive relationship between institutional investors and corporate performance. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A note on equity ownership and corporate value in Greece

Over the last three decades a substantial amount of empirical research has been undertaken to investigate the behaviour of major securities markets. While some work has been done with data from the markets of developing countries, considerable testing must be undertaken for the world's emerging securities market. The objective of this paper is to present some Greek evidence of the heteroscedasticity in the market model. The paper examined 43 companies quoted on the Athens Stock Exchange and found substantial evidence of heteroscedasticity.
