Physical, mechanical, and microstructural characterisation of an innovative thermal insulating render incorporating silica aerogel

Mechanical, thermal, microstructural, and acoustic properties of optimized lightweight coating mortars were analyzed. The fine aggregate was partially replaced by insulant alternative aggregates: silica aerogel, expanded polystyrene, and vermiculite. The consistency index, incorporated air content, water retention, compressive strength, mass density, water absorption, voids index, thermal conductivity, SEM microstructure analysis, and acoustic absorption were investigated. As a case study, the thermal resistance parameters were calculated for Brazilian bioclimatic zones, for two ceramic bricks masonry systems. Silica aerogel reduced the mortar thermal conductivity by up to 60% (EPS 53%, vermiculite 48%), and reduced the coating thickness from 3.4 cm to 1.4 cm for the same thermal performance. Microstructural analysis suggests a chemical reaction between silica from aerogel and pore solution from the cement mortar forming C–S–H gel with a low Ca/Si ratio. EPS mortar obtained the best performance for the acoustic insulation, and the silica aerogel mortar obtained the lowest performance.

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) concrete is commonly used as the core material of commercial sandwich panels (CSPs). It is environmentally friendly and lightweight but has poor strength. Adding fibers can improve the microstructure of EPS concrete and reduce the weakening effect of EPS beads on the mechanical properties of concrete. An orthogonal experimental design (OED) was used in this paper to analyze the influence of length and content of polypropylene fiber (PF), glass fiber (GF), and carbon fiber (CF) on the physical and mechanical properties and micromorphology of EPS concrete. Among them, CFs have the most apparent impact on concrete and produce the most significant improvements in all properties. According to the requirements of the flexural performance of CSPs, the splitting tensile strength was taken as the optimization index, and the predicted optimal combination (OC) of EPS concrete with fibers was selected. The variations in the material properties, mechanical properties, and microstructure with age were analyzed. The results show that with increasing age, the dry density, compressive strength, and splitting tensile strength of concrete are markedly improved relative to those of the CSP core material and the control case (CC), and even the degree of hydration is improved.

An Investigation of the Properties of Expanded Polystyrene Concrete with Fibers Based on an Orthogonal Experimental Design

Objective: Seroclearance of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) remains a challenge to the functional cure of HBV infection due to an HBV-specific immune tolerance that prevents virus eradication. Methods: In this clinical study, chronic hepatitis B patients treated with the standard nucleotide analog (NA) Adefovir Dipivoxil (ADV) or treated with ADV and IFN- were immunized with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) in combination with Human HBV Vaccine. Results: This THRIL-GM-Vac approach (THRee Injections of Low-dose GM-CSF followed by one dose of the HBV Vaccine) has achieved at least a 10-fold reduction of HBsAg level in 10 out of 23 (43.5%) patients tested. Moreover, two out of the 10 patients eventually reached seroclearance. Thus THRIL-GM-Vac could break HBV-specific tolerance and boost HBsAg-specific cellular immunity. Consequently, the THRIL-GM-Vac approach could provide an effective therapy for patients bearing medium-to-low levels of HBsAg. Conclusion: Our findings carry the clinical significance of showing a novel way to break immunotolerance that can tackle the persistent infection manifested as chronic HBV burden in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients.

Abstract. Digitalization of urban roads is an important part of smart city construction. In addition to having a basic understanding of the structure of the transportation network, we need to have a preliminary understanding of the information around the road, the current status of the road, and the impact that municipal projects may have on the road. At present, the three-dimensional information of the ground parts of roads can be obtained efficiently and accurately on a large scale by using three-dimensional scanning technology. However, there is a lack of comprehensive and intuitive understanding of the under-ground information and a lack of synergistic consideration of the ground and under-ground information. In this paper, a ground and under-ground urban road surveying system based on 3D LiDAR and 3D ground penetrating radar (GPR) is presented. The system covers multi-sensor coordinated control, time-space datum setup, and post-processing data. Experiments show that the system can realize the integrated ground and under-ground 3D surveying for urban roads, generate intuitive three-dimensional point cloud map model of ground and under-ground of urban roads, and provide effective technical support for smart city construction.
