A novel ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter (BPF) is presented using the hybrid microstrip and coplanar waveguide (CPW) structure. A CPW nonuniform resonator or multiple-mode resonator (MMR) is constructed to produce its first three resonant modes occurring around the lower end, center, and higher end of the UWB band. Then, a microstrip/CPW surface-to-surface coupled line is formed and modeled to allocate the enhanced coupling peak around the center of this UWB band, i.e., 6.85GHz. As such, a five-pole UWB BPF is built up and realized with the passband covering the entire UWB band (3.1-10.6GHz). A predicted frequency response is finally verified by the experiment. In addition, the designed UWB filter, with a single resonator, only occupies one full-wavelength in length or 16.9mm.

A compact microstrip-line ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter (BPF) using the proposed stub-loaded multiple-mode resonator (MMR) is presented. This MMR is formed by loading three open-ended stubs in shunt to a simple stepped-impedance resonator in center and two symmetrical locations, respectively. By properly adjusting the lengths of these stubs, the first four resonant modes of this MMR can be evenly allocated within the 3.1-to-10.6 GHz UWB band while the fifth resonant frequency is raised above 15.0GHz. It results in the formulation of a novel UWB BPF with compact-size and widened upper-stopband by incorporating this MMR with two interdigital parallel-coupled feed lines. Simulated and measured results are found in good agreement with each other, showing improved UWB bandpass behaviors with the insertion loss lower than 0.8dB, return loss higher than 14.3dB, and maximum group delay variation less than 0.64ns in the realized UWB passband

Compact UWB Bandpass Filter Using Stub-Loaded Multiple-Mode Resonator

This letter presents a novel ultra-wideband (UWB) microstrip bandpass filter on a microstrip line with improved out-of-band performances. A multiple-mode resonator (MMR) is first constituted to equally allocate its first three resonant frequencies in the 3.1-10.6-GHz UWB band. Two capacitive-ended interdigital coupled lines are then formed to assign their transmission zero towards the fourth-order resonant frequency of this MMR, thereby suppressing the first spurious passband. Moreover, two outer arms in the interdigital lines are properly tapered to compensate the phase imbalance or group delay near the UWB upper-end relying on extra capacitive-ended stubs. And finally, two UWB filters with one- and two-MMRs are designed and implemented to experimentally demonstrate the improved out-of-band performances, i.e., widened/deepened upper-stopband and sharpened rejection skirts outside the UWB passband

Capacitive-Ended Interdigital Coupled Lines for UWB Bandpass Filters With Improved Out-of-Band Performances

This paper develops a novel ultra-wideband bandpass filter by cascading a broadband bandpass filter with another broadband bandstop filter. Properly selected impedances of transmission lines achieve broadband bandpass and bandstop filters and make independent designs possible. Detailed design and synthesis procedures are provided; moreover, agreement between measured and theoretically predicted results demonstrates feasibility of the proposed filter. Due to its simple structure, the ultra-wideband bandpass filter newly introduced in this paper is suitable for integration in the single-chipped circuit or implementation on printed circuit boards.

A Microstrip Ultra-Wideband Bandpass Filter With Cascaded Broadband Bandpass and Bandstop Filters

A differential-mode wideband bandpass filter (BPF) on microstrip line is proposed with good common-mode suppression. A four port two stage branch-line differential-mode BPF is first designed. Then, open circuited stubs are attached to the middle of two of the vertical branches. As such, its two-port bisection becomes a bandpass or bandstop filtering topology under differental- or common-mode excitations, respectively. The lengths and widths of these stubs can be properly adjusted to produce a highly attenuated and widened stopband under the common-mode operation. Finally, a wideband differential-mode BPF is designed and fabricated. The predicted and measured performances are in good agreement with each other, showing good common-mode suppression with an insertion loss higher than 20 dB over the differential-mode passband with a fractional bandwidth of 65%.

A Differential-Mode Wideband Bandpass Filter on Microstrip Line for UWB Application

A new technique is developed for designing a composite microstrip bandpass filter (BPF) with a 3 dB fractional bandwidth of more than 100%. The BPF is suitable for ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless communications. The design utilizes embedding individually designed highpass structures and lowpass filters (LPF) into each other, followed by an optimization for tuning in-band performance. The stepped-impedance LPF is employed to attenuate the upper stopband and quarter-wave short-circuited stubs are used to realize the lower stopband. Two such BPFs are fabricated and measured to demonstrate the performance.
