A SoftRouter architecture deconstructs routers by separating the control entities of a router from its forwarding components, enabling dynamic binding between them. In the SoftRouter architecture, control plane functions are aggregated and implemented on a few smart servers which control forwarding elements that are multiple network hops away. A dynamic binding protocol performs network-wide control plane failovers. Network stability is improved by aggregating and remotely hosting routing protocols, such as OSPF and BGP. This results in faster convergence, lower protocol messages processed, and fewer route changes following a failure. The SoftRouter architecture includes a few smart control entities that manage a large number of forwarding elements to provide greater support for network-wide control. In the SoftRouter architecture, routing protocols operate remotely at a control element and control one or more forwarding elements by downloading the forwarding tables, etc. into the forwarding elements. Intra-domain routing and inter-domain routing are also included.

For example, a peer-to-peer node may be configured as a network-aware BitTorrent Tracker, Gnutella supernode, etc., and can use IGP and BGP information from a router to determine how the node behaves.

Modifying operation of peer-to-peer networks based on integrating network routing information

A technique configures an intermediate network node to automatically determine whether a route advertised by a routing protocol is important for fast convergence in a computer network. As used herein, an important route needed for fast convergence is a route advertised by the routing protocol, such as an exterior gateway routing protocol (EGP) process executing on the node, as a next-hop address, since external connectivity relies on such a route. Notably, the EGP process interacts with an interior gateway routing protocol (IGP) process executing on the node to identify the route as an important route. Identification of an important route, in turn, allows IGP to process the route in a high priority fashion, thereby facilitating fast convergence.

Automatic route tagging of BGP next-hop routes in IGP

A method for exchanging routing information between I-BGP routers within an autonomous system (AS) advantageously enables a solution to both persistent route oscillation problems and transient route oscillation problems which may occur when using I-BGP in a given AS. Conventional I-BGP protocol techniques are extended by enabling I-BGP speakers (e.g., routers) to communicate a set of possible best paths to a given destination, rather than communicating only a single best path, to each of their I-BGP peers within the given AS. Specifically, a plurality of possible best paths to a destination are communicated (where there are in fact more than one) from an I-BGP speaker in a given AS to its I-BGP peers (within the given AS), for each neighboring AS that provides any such paths (i.e., routes to the destination).
