A network device is described that load-balances network traffic among a set of network servers based on electrical power consumption of the network servers. The network device may measure electrical power consumption in a variety of ways, and may generate and maintain a power consumption profile for each of the network server. The power consumption profile may describe the respective server power consumption in increasing granularity. For instance, each power consumption profile may specify electrical power consumption according to watts consumed by a server per average transaction, watts consumed per transaction for a specific type of software application, watts consumed per transaction for a software application for individual network resources, and so on. Furthermore, the profiles may be maintained for individual servers or aggregated for groups or sequences of servers.

Distribution of network communications based on server power consumption

A distributed control system having a plurality of network-connected control units is realized in which a task having characteristics specific to a controller, such as input/output processing being necessary, or data stored in a dedicated controller having to be used, can be transferred to another controller for execution. In order to transfer a task specific to a controller to another controller for execution, a transfer source controller is provided with, in addition to an original function, a function of collecting input data of a storage area and context information and transferring them to a transfer destination controller. The destination controller has a function of storing the data transferred from the source controller in a storage area, making arithmetic operations, and sending the arithmetic result to the source controller. An arithmetic operation program is provided for both the source and destination controllers. The destination controller determines a reference address by a method appropriate for task processing.

Distributed control system

A system for managing the operation of a plurality of radio modules integrated within the same wireless communication device. In at least one embodiment of the present invention, time may be allocated for use in communicating over one or more wireless communication mediums. This time may be allocated based on a determination that a maximum power usage threshold will not be exceeded, and that potential communication conflicts may be avoided, over a period of time. The allocation may result in an operational schedule that may be utilized by radio modules in the wireless communication device that support the one or more wireless communication mediums.

Multiradio power aware traffic management

A mechanism is provided for scheduling application tasks. A scheduler receives a task that identifies a desired frequency and a desired maximum number of competing hardware threads. The scheduler determines whether a user preference designates either maximization of performance or minimization of energy consumption. Responsive to the user preference designating the performance, the scheduler determines whether there is an idle processor core in a plurality of processor cores available. Responsive to no idle processor being available, the scheduler identifies a subset of processor cores having a smallest load coefficient. From the subset of processor cores, the scheduler determines whether there is at least one processor core that matches desired parameters of the task. Responsive to at least one processor core matching the desired parameters of the task, the scheduler assigns the task to one of the at least one processor core that matches the desired parameters.

Optimizing energy consumption and application performance in a multi-core multi-threaded processor system

A method is provided for use in a mobile communication terminal configured to support a plurality of applications, wherein each application is executed by performing one or more tasks. The method includes, in response to a scheduling request from an application, obtaining an indication of power supply condition at a requested run-time of at least one of the tasks. The method further includes obtaining a prediction of a rate of energy usage by the task at the requested run-time, and making a scheduling decision for the task. The scheduling decision comprises making a selection from a group of two or more alternative dispositions for the task. The selection is made according to a criterion that relates the run-tune power-supply condition to the predicted rate of energy usage by the task.

A mobile device (10) manages tasks (18) using a scheduler (20) for scheduling tasks on multiple processors (12) To conserve energy, the set of tasks to be scheduled are divided into two (or more) subsets, which are scheduled according to different procedures In a specific embodiment, the first subset contains tasks with the highest energy consumption deviation based on the processor that executes the task This subset is scheduled according to a power-aware procedure for scheduling tasks primarily based on energy consumption criteria If there is no failure, the second subset is scheduled according to a real-time constrained procedure that schedules tasks primarily based on the deadlines associated with the various tasks in the second subset If there is a failure in either procedure, one or more tasks with the lowest energy consumption deviation are moved from the first subset to the second subset and the scheduling is repeated
