Ecological risk assessment of pelagic sharks caught in Atlantic pelagic longline fisheries
Enric Cortés,Freddy Arocha,Lawrence R. Beerkircher,Felipe Carvalho,Andrés Domingo,Michelle R. Heupel,Hannes Holtzhausen,Miguel N. Santos,Marta Ribera,Colin A. Simpfendorfer +9 more
TL;DR: Results indicated that most species of pelagic sharks have low productivities and varying levels of susceptibility to pelagic longline gear, and pelagic Sharks are particularly vulnerable to pelotic longline fisheries mostly as a result of their limited productivity.

Oocyte development and maturity classification of swordfish from the north-western Atlantic
TL;DR: The dynamics of oocyte maturation is typified by seven bootstrapped oocyte distributions that represent the maturation process, and aids in the identification of ovaries with hydrated oocytes that have not spawned.

Methodological assessment of 2b-RAD genotyping technique for population structure inferences in yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares).
Carlo Pecoraro,Carlo Pecoraro,Massimiliano Babbucci,Adriana Villamor,Rafaella Franch,Chiara Papetti,Bruno Leroy,Sofía Ortega-García,Jeff Muir,Jay R. Rooker,Freddy Arocha,Hilario Murua,Iker Zudaire,Emmanuel Chassot,Nathalie Bodin,Fausto Tinti,Luca Bargelloni,Alessia Cariani +17 more
TL;DR: The utility of 2b-RAD genotyping technique for investigating population genetic diversity and differentiation in high gene-flow species is demonstrated for the first time and results showed the efficiency of this genotypesing technique in assessing genetic divergence in a marine fish with high dispersal potential.

Effects of species misidentification on population assessment of overfished white marlin Tetrapturus albidus and roundscale spearfish T. georgii
Lawrence R. Beerkircher,Freddy Arocha,Ann M. Barse,Eric D. Prince,Victor Restrepo,Joseph E. Serafy,Mahmood S. Shivji +6 more
TL;DR: It is shown that roundscale spearfish currently constitute a substantial proportion of the overall 'white marlin' catch in the western North Atlantic, with high spatial variation within this region, and the accuracy of current biological knowledge on white marlin is compromised by 'contamination' due to misidentification.
A typology of fisheries management tools: using experience to catalyse greater success
Elizabeth R. Selig,Kristin M. Kleisner,Oren Ahoobim,Freddy Arocha,Annabelle Cruz-Trinidad,Rod Fujita,Mafaniso Hara,Laure Katz,Patrick McConney,Blake D. Ratner,Lina M. Saavedra-Díaz,A.M. Schwarz,Djiga Thiao,Elin Torell,Sebastian Troëng,Sebastian Troëng,Sebastián Villasante +16 more
TL;DR: This article conducted a literature review of 390 studies to assess how fisheries characteristics affected management tool performance across both small-scale and large-scale fisheries, and found that the most commonly used management tool in a region was often the most successful, although the scale of success varied.
