How has Japan become a major economic power, a world leader in the automotive and electronics industries? What is the secret of their success? The consensus has been that, though the Japanese are not particularly innovative, they are exceptionally skilful at imitation, at improving products that already exist. But now two leading Japanese business experts, Ikujiro Nonaka and Hiro Takeuchi, turn this conventional wisdom on its head: Japanese firms are successful, they contend, precisely because they are innovative, because they create new knowledge and use it to produce successful products and technologies. Examining case studies drawn from such firms as Honda, Canon, Matsushita, NEC, 3M, GE, and the U.S. Marines, this book reveals how Japanese companies translate tacit to explicit knowledge and use it to produce new processes, products, and services.

The knowledge-creating company : how Japanese companies create the dynamics of innovation

The constant comparative method (CCM) together with theoretical sampling constitutethe core of qualitative analysis in the grounded theory approach and in other types ofqualitative research. Since the application of the method remains rather unclear, researchers do not know how to `go about' the CCM in their research practice. This study contributes to a purposeful approach of the CCM in order to systematize the analysis process and to increase the traceability and verification of the analyses. The step by step approach is derived from and illustrated with an empirical study into the experience of multiple sclerosis (MS) by patients and their spousal care providers. In this study five different steps were distinguished on the basis of four criteria: (1) the data involved and the overall analysis activities, (2) the aim, (3) the results and (4) the questions asked. It is concluded that systematization of qualitative analysis results from the researcher using a sound plan for conducting CCM regarding these four aspects.

McQuail's mass communication theory

Peter Berger (1929) is an American sociologist best known for his collaboration with Thomas Luckman in writing The Social Construction of Reality: A Treatise in the Sociology of Knowledge. That book argues that human reality, and knowledge of it, is a social construct, emerging from the individual or group’s interaction with larger social structures (institutions). Social structures, once widely adopted, lose their history as social constructions (objectivation), and come over time, by the people who live within them, to be deemed natural realities independent of human construction (reification). Berger predicted, in his later book, The Sacred Canopy, near-term all-encompassing secularization of religion, which prediction has proved false, especially in the third world (as Berger himself has acknowledged in his later work, Desecularization).

Over kwalitatief onderzoek is de laatste jaren veel gepubliceerd, zowel op inleidend als op specialistisch niveau. Daarnaast is er een enorme ontwikkeling geweest op het gebied van elektronische tekstverwerking en van programmatuur voor kwalitatieve analyse. Een probleem van het werken met standaardprogramma's is dat de gebruiker uit het oog verliest waar hij bij kwalitatief analyseren om gaat: het maken van een systematische analyse door een diepgaande verkenning van het basismateriaal. Vanuit deze optiek behandelen de auteurs Wester en Peters het kwalitatief-interpreterende onderzoek. Daarbij wordt aandacht besteed aan de uitgangspunten voor kwalitatief onderzoek, de keuzes met betrekking tot de onderzoeksopzt, de mogelijkheden van waarneming, de doelstellingen van de analysefasen en de kwaliteitscontroles. Kwalitatieve analyse: Uitgangspunten en procedures

Background Intimate partner abuse is very common among female patients in family practice. In general, doctors overlook the possibility of partner abuse.

Aim To investigate whether awareness of intimate partner abuse, as well as active questioning, increase after attending focus group and training, or focus group only.

Design of study Randomised controlled trial in a stratified sample.

Setting Family practices in Rotterdam and surrounding areas.

Method A full-training group ( n = 23), a group attending focus group discussions alone ( n = 14), and a control group ( n = 17) were formed. Data were collected with incident reporting of every female patient (aged >18 years) that was suspected of, or presented, partner abuse during a period of 6 months. The primary outcome measure was the number of reported patients; the secondary outcome measure was the number of patients with whom the GP had non-obvious reasons to suspect/discuss abuse.

Results Comparison of the full-training group ( n = 87 patients) versus the control group ( n = 14 patients) resulted in a rate ratio of 4.54 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.55 to 8.09, P <0.001); the focus group only group ( n = 30 cases) versus control group: rate ratio of 2.2 (95% CI = 1.14 to 4.26, P = 0.019); full-training versus the focus group only group: rate ratio of 2.19 (95% CI = 1.36 to 3.52, P = 0.001). Comparison of the full-training group with the untrained groups for awareness of partner abuse in case of non-obvious signs resulted in: odds ratio 5.92 (95% CI = 2.25 to 15.62, P <0.01) all corrected for sex, district, practice setting, working part-/full-time, experience, and age of the doctor.

Conclusions Training was the most significant determinant to improve awareness and identification of intimate partner abuse. Active questioning increased, especially where there were non-obvious signs. The focus group on its own doubled the awareness of partner abuse.

A content analysis of scientific news coverage in Dutch newspapers was conducted and supplemented with interviews with ten news editors and science journalists. In a total of ninety-six editions of the newspapers, we found 624 reports about scientific research. The content analysis focuses on the actual reporting of background and methodological aspects of the research covered. Contrary to expectations, quality papers and science sections in general did not supply more or better information on these aspects. The interviews revealed that reporting on scientific research means avoidance of complex information, even in the science section. Since most social-scientific research is reported in the news part of the paper, it generally lacks a critical approach to conceptual and statistical formulations.
