The research reported here is part of a comprehensive investigation of medicine, diet, and health in eastern Indonesia. Specifically, we explore the health implications of medicinal plant use by contemporary peoples of Maluku Province, where health care continues to be significantly influenced by the medical traditions of an ethnically diverse population. To date, no systematic field-based research on medicinal plant use has been conducted in eastern Indonesia, and the few studies that exist have generated catalogues of botanicals by function, without efforts to link indigenous plant use with phytochemical constituents or to explore the implications of plant use for human health. By contrast, our research links ethnography to pharmacological action. We report the results of our pilot study. Follow-up studies will amplify this to include laboratory investigation of commonly used medicinal plants.

Ethnomedicine In Maluku, Eastern Indonesia

Two neighboring communities in western Seram were studied for di-etary variation. One community was a traditional, rural Malukan com-munity (Lohiatala, n=65); the other was composed of transmigrants from heavily populated regions of western Indonesia (Waihatu, n=86). A dietary diversity score derived from 24-hour recall data revealed significantly greater dietary diversity in the traditional community, especially among women and children. A food group analysis yielded significantly greater consumption of sago, tubers (especially cassava) and protein foods in the traditional community, while the transmigrant community consumed significantly more rice. Perhaps the diverse Malukan diet can serve as a model for the Indonesian government’s objective of diversifying diets, especially among transmigrants.

Previous studies in Indonesia have indicated that Indonesians consume an average of 2,675 kcal/day (Soekirman et al. 1992: 8). In the province of Maluku, energy intake has been determined to be 2,180 kcal/day, while protein intake averaged 48.2 grams (Indonesia Membangun 1988: 417). The average energy intake is low, according to FAO/WHO recommendations (1974: 66, table 1), although protein is adequate. Previous studies have also indicated that 74% of pregnant women in Maluku have moderate to severe anemia (<11 g/dl; GOI-UNICEF 1988: 62). Maluku is a region where sago is a staple food. Dietary studies that describe nutrient intake of sago-eating populations are not available in the published literature. Data on nutritional status are also limited. This study describes nutrient intake and nutritional status of women in Lohiatala, Kairatu District, Western Seram, a sago-based foraging society.
