Background: Enuresis is a common dilemma among minors, which is under-documented and under-disclosed. The plight has a negative effect on the quality of life, with an adverse bearing on social and academic development. The recognition of its strains on the family added to the aforementioned necessitated the designation of every last Tuesday of May as annual bedwetting day to create complacent personality among subjects faced with this challenge. Enuresis has worldwide distribution; however, the national prevalence of enuresis is unknown in Nigeria. Objective: The aim of our review is to determine the prevailing prevalence of juvenile enuresis in the country and its regions. Materials and Methods: We used electronic databases to explore reviews and select studies, and then extracted necessary data from the appraisals on prevalence and incidence of enuresis among children and adolescents from Nigerian communities. STATA 12 random effect meta-analysis of observational studies was used to compute the pooled prevalence and other estimates. Results: Twenty-four studies fall within the inclusion criteria. The combined pooled population studied was 15,172 (n = 3567 children and adolescents). The pooled prevalence of enuresis was 28.19% (22.37%–34.00%) (95% confidence interval). Conclusion: This study showed that enuresis is hyperendemic among Nigerian children and adolescents.

Prevalence of enuresis among children and adolescents: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Introduction: Nocturnal enuresis is a common distressing disorder that carries a significant burden. This disorder has psychological, social and financial implications for the families and their children. Aim: This study aimed to assess the effect of applying health education learning package (HELP) on mothers having children with nocturnal enuresis. Method: A quasi-experimental research design with repeated measures was utilized. A convenient sample of (88) mothers and their children (88) was recruited from the urinary incontinence out-patient clinic that affiliated to Mansoura University Children's Hospital (MUCH), Egypt. Seven structured tools were used for data collection. Results: There were statistically significant differences in mothers’ knowledge, practices and attitude post-application of the HELP regarding nocturnal enuresis compared to pre-application (P=0.000). Additionally, the frequency of bedwetting and urination problems as polyurea and urinary tract infection among the affected children were decreased. Conclusion: Applying of health education learning package regarding nocturnal enuresis showed a significant improvement in mothers' knowledge, practices and attitude. As well, the associated clinical manifestations among the affected children were decreased post-application of the HELP. Overall, the studied mother found the HELP is useful and effective in solving problems of the mothers and children related to nocturnal enuresis.

Applying Health Education Learning Package for Mothers Regarding Nocturnal Enuresis

Background: Nowadays, one of the most important social troubles is the sleep disorder that more than 40% of some population faced. Biofeedback (BFB) as a complementary method could reduce many of its effects.Objectives: This study aims to show the effects of BFB on the promotion of sleep quality and control sleep disorder impacts. Methods: An interventional study was conducted on 48 volunteer patients with sleep disorders. Twelve patients were included in each of four groups consisting of control. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used as a standard tool for sleep quality measurement in both groups. Abdominal breathing via chest breathing was trained as a BFB training exercise for patients. Heart rate variability (HRV) was measured before and after BFB training. Data were checked for outliers and normal distribution. SPSS version 22 and a diagram prepared by sigma plot version 14 did data analysis. Results: The finding showed the promotion of sleep quality by pulse regulated abdominal breathing (PRAB) by a significant difference before and after BFB for four weeks. Conclusion: Based on the finding of this study, polyvagal BFB training was utilized as a complementary method for HRV thus not only can it treat the patients with a sleep disorder but also promote sleep quality of the normal persons. Hence, the PRAB can be used for the patients with chief complain of sleep disorder.
