From Efficient Markets Theory to Behavioral Finance

Email: jasonwilliamburton@gmail.com Abstract Despite abundant literature theorizing societal implications of algorithmic decision making, relatively little is known about the conditions that lead to the acceptance or rejection of algorithmically generated insights by individual users of decision aids. More specifically, recent findings of algorithm aversion—the reluctance of human forecasters to use superior but imperfect algorithms—raise questions about whether joint humanalgorithm decision making is feasible in practice. In this paper, we systematically review the topic of algorithm aversion as it appears in 61 peer-reviewed articles between 1950 and 2018 and follow its conceptual trail across disciplines. We categorize and report on the proposed causes and solutions of algorithm aversion in five themes: expectations and expertise, decision autonomy, incentivization, cognitive compatibility, and divergent rationalities. Although each of the presented themes addresses distinct features of an algorithmic decision aid, human users of the decision aid, and/or the decision making environment, apparent interdependencies are highlighted. We conclude that resolving algorithm aversion requires an updated research program with an emphasis on theory integration. We provide a number of empirical questions that can be immediately carried forth by the behavioral decision making community.

A Systematic Review of Algorithm Aversion in Augmented Decision Making

Recent work, in journals such as MIS Quarterly and Management Science, has highlighted the importance of evaluating the influence of common method bias (CMB) on the results of statistical analysis. In this research note, we assess the utility of the unmeasured latent method construct (ULMC) approach in partial least squares (PLS), introduced by Liang et al. (2007). Such an assessment of the ULMC approach is important, because it has been employed in 76 studies since it appeared in MIS Quarterly in early 2007. Using data generated via Monte Carlo simulations, we use PLS structural equation modeling (SEM) to demonstrate that the ULMC approach of Liang et al. is neither able to detect, nor control for, common method bias. Method estimates using this approach resulted in negligible estimates, regardless of whether there were some, large, or no method bias introduced in the simulated data. Our study contributes to the IS and research methods literature by illustrating that, and explaining why the ULMC approach does not accurately detect common method bias in PLS. Further, our results build on prior work done using covariance-based SEM questioning the usefulness of the ULMC technique for detecting CMB.

Assessing common method bias: problems with the ULMC technique

In today's networked economy, ideas that challenge existing business models and paradigms are becoming more important. This study investigated how individual differences, groupware-based creativity techniques, and ideas from others influenced the type of ideas that individuals generated. While individual differences were important (in that some individuals were inherently more likely to generate ideas that followed the existing problem paradigm while others were more likely to generate paradigm-modifying ideas that attempted to change the problem paradigm), the exposure to paradigm-modifying ideas from others and the use of intuitive groupware-based creativity techniques rather than analytical groupware-based creativity techniques were found to increase the number of paradigm-modifying ideas produced.

Hemispheric specialization, cognitive differences, and their implications for the design of decision support systems

INTRODUCTION Current college students, also known as, millennial learners, are digital natives, the first generation to come of age in a digital world (Ito, Horst, Bittanti, Boyd, Herr-Stephenson, Lange, Pascoe, & Robinson, 2008; Wolff, 2009). In general, this generation has grown up with video games and social networking, and prefer to be connected at all times to their friends and family through texting, instant messaging, mobile phones, and Facebook and/or MySpace (Ito et al., 2008). A national study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project determined that college students adopt, adapt, and heavily use the Internet (Jones, 2002). As the first generation to be considered "digital natives," will the construct of the "digital divide" have any bearing upon college students' usage of social networking sites? Dimensions of the digital divide have been identified as socioeconomic status (income and education), age, and race (Birnie & Horvath, 2002; Howard, Rainie, & Jones, 2001; Lenhart, 2000; Novak & Hoffman, 1998; Rios & Gaines, 1998; UCLA Center for Communication Policy, 2001; Wilhelm, 2000). The digital divide is the well-studied concept that suggests people with higher incomes and higher levels of education that are White, male, and younger are more likely to have access to the Internet (Jung, 2008). However, a more recent Pew Internet study notes that teen girls, beginning at age 15, are faster adopters of social networking than boys (Lenhart & Madden, 2007). In addition, nearly 73 percent of teens who use the Internet and an equal number of young adults use social network sites (Lenhart, Purcell, Smith, & Zickuhr, 2010). Does this pattern of social networking usage hold true for college students, as well? This study explores how the digital native generation of current college students interacts through social networking sites, and whether the "digital divide" plays a significant role in usage and participation. Research questions are predicated as follows: RQ1: Are there differences between male and female college students in the usage of social networking websites? RQ2: Is age related to the usage of social networking websites? While it may seem that the Internet has been around forever, it wasn't until 1994 when a nascent revolution in self-expression became possible online know as the web (http). Individuals began creating and uploading basic, static websites. In 1995, Classmates.com appeared on the Web, providing a way for people to find each other. Group-led chat rooms and discussion boards quickly followed. As technologies evolved to what is now known as Web 2.0, or the "writeable Web," new forms of interactive and integrative social networks opened the door to the establishment of online communities where members post their profiles and exchange information, share interests, and discuss common topics. The connections work through the "Invite-a-Friend" system (Gillin, 2009). Fast forward to today and estimates are that 75 percent of the U.S. population is now online and more than one billion people post information online through social media channels, such as blogs, Twitter; social networks (Facebook, MySpace); and photo/video sharing services (flickr, YouTube) (Phillips & Young, 2009). To illustrate the ubiquitous nature of the Internet's influence on digital natives, YouTube recently announced that Lady Gaga's number one hit, "Bad Romance" has been played 185.39 million times as of April 15, 2010 (Johnson, 2010). Beyond the pop culture motivations, social networking provides a way for students to establish interpersonal relationships quickly. INTRODUCTION There has been great interest by researchers and practitioners to the subject of enterprise architecture in the information system and information technology fields since the initial publication of Zachman's framework in 1987 (Brancheau, Janz, & Wetherbe 1996; Zachman, 1987) Among various topics related to enterprise architecture, the need to align Information Technology (IT) with business appears near the top of the key issues in organizations ranked by information systems and technology (IST) executives each year over the last decade The challenge sounds simple yet it is seemingly difficult to achieve given the dynamic nature of the competitive environment This also has been evidenced by the much debated productivity paradox resulting from inconclusive findings in research on IT investment and organizational productivity (Weill & Broadbent, 1998; Ross & Beath, 2002) Part of this ambiguity arises from disregarded contingencies and time lags (Chan, 2002) and potentially the lack of needed integration across organizational functions (Butler, 2008; Candwell, 2008; Kong, Jung, & Park, 2009; Moller, Chaudhry, & Jorgensen, 2008; Toh, Nagel, & Oakden, 2009; Wadhwa, Mishra, & Chan, 2009) or across organizations (Fedorowicz, Gogan, & Ray, 2004)  Research has shown that strategic alignment theory and practice are in synchronization and there is little conventional academic wisdom to challenge, except for the need to document information systems and technology strategy and plans (Chan, 2002) Such a need calls for the adoption of an enterprise architecture software tool to document the IST strategy and plans In the market, there are some enterprise architecture software tools available that support popular frameworks in the industry, such as the Zachman Framework, DoDAF (C4ISR Framework), and TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework) This research reviews the concept and practice of enterprise architecture in the IST literature, government practice and industry applications as well as vendors' approaches to develop a comprehensive framework for enterprise architecture planning and identify the value and managerial implications to enterprise development of EA when it is implemented in organizations What is enterprise architecture is discussed first The relationship between enterprise architecture and enterprise development is summarized Then EA as a foundation for business strategy execution is discussed Enterprise architecture planning is presented in a concise manner A discussion of the enterprise architecture maturity framework is developed The value of enterprise architecture is then discussed Then the steps in building enterprise architecture are presented The paper concludes with the limitations and contributions of this research WHAT IS ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE? The Value of Implementing Enterprise Architecture in Organizations

Government and private health agencies are being compelled by internal and external forces to integrate their electronic records and resources. Many medical systems consist of isolated, disparate implementations that are now being required to interoperate with other systems. This study reviewed the literature on healthcare and other large systems of systems (SOS) implementations and frameworks to determine common problem themes. Reports on large government systems revealed that planning frameworks had difficulty accounting for unexpected aspects of system behavior when a systems' whole exceeds the sum of its parts. System Dynamics modeling, first developed at MIT, was examined as a possible answer to comprehending large system behaviors without being overcome by implementation details.
