Different pathways mediate virus inducibility of the human IFN-α1 and IFN-β genes
Nicholas J. MacDonald,Dietmar Kuhl,Deborah Maguire,Dieter Naf,Peter Gallant,Apurva Goswamy,Hubert Hug,Hansreudi Büeler,Madan M. Chaturvedi,José de la Fuente,Heinz Ruffner,François Meyer,Charles Weissmann +12 more
TL;DR: Multimerization of GAAANN generates sequences frequent in virus-inducible promoters that represent three distinct terminal pathways mediating virus induction.

Reversible silencing of enhancers by sequences derived from the human IFN-α promoter
Dletmar Kuhl,José de la Fuente,Madan M. Chaturvedi,Satish Parimoo,John A. Ryals,François Meyer,Charles Weissmann +6 more
TL;DR: Surprisingly, under noninduced conditions, tetrameric repA, GAAAGT, and AAGTGA (but not VRE(IFNα)) completely silenced enhancement of constitutive transcription by the SV40 72 bp repeat when interposed between the latter and the TATA box; silencing was fully abrogated by induction.

Site-directed mutagenesis in DNA: Generation of point mutations in cloned β globin complementary DNA at the positions corresponding to amino acids 121 to 123
TL;DR: Nucleotide sequence analysis of the critical region of six Eco RI-resistant isolates revealed that two plasmids had one, three had two and one had three A · T → G · C transitions, all located within the substituted region.

Interactions of Qβ replicase with Qβ RNA
TL;DR: In this paper, replicase binding at two internal regions of Qβ RNA was obtained, one region (at about 1250 to 1350 nucleotides from the 5′ end) overlaps with the initiation site for coat protein synthesis; this interaction is thought to be inessential for template activity but rather to be involved in the regulation of protein synthesis.

Reversed genetics: a new approach to the elucidation of structure--function relationship
Charles Weissmann,Hans Weber,Tadatsugu Taniguchi,W. Müller,François Meyer +4 more
- 27 Jun 1979
TL;DR: Two mutant RNAs with extracistronic nucleotide substitutions have been generated; one of these was viable, albeit with a reduced propagation rate, while the other was non-infectious.
