A mechanism for instantly and accurately adjusting pressure of air passed by a pressure regulator with a valve assembly controlled by a flexible diaphragm. A compressed coil spring bears on the diaphragm. A non-rotating spring guide plate bears on the coil spring. A pinion shaft has a threaded end engaged with a threaded portion of the spring guide plate to move it axially of the coil spring. A pinion gear on the shaft is engaged by spur gears which are in turn engaged by a ring gear. Rotation of the ring gear advances and retracts the spring guide plate axially of the coil spring. A knob ring disposed adjacent a stationary calibrated pressure scale and secured to the ring gear, indicates the pressure of air passed by the regulator for each position of the knob ring around the scale.

There is disclosed a system for delivering gas at a predetermined rate of flow, including a diaphgram type flow controller, a pressure regulator for providing a constant flow of gas to the flow controller, and a microprocessor controlled stepper motor utilizing an optical encoder to adjust the rate of flow of a gas leaving the controller without having to use a gas flow measurement device to monitor the flow rate.

An air pressure regulator includes a housing having inlet and outlet ports extending along a common axis. A movable valve member and a piston are positioned in the housing on opposite sides of a housing flow passage. The movable valve member is adjacent the inlet port while the piston is adjacent the outlet port. The piston has a central stem extending through the housing flow passage in radially-spaced relationship thereto for engaging the movable valve member. The piston is normally biased in a direction toward the movable valve member for holding same displaced from a seat around the housing flow passage. When a predetermined pressure exists at the outlet port, the piston moves away from the movable valve member for allowing same to move into engagement with a seat around the housing flow passage for closing such passage.

The present invention is directed to a gas control device for controlling the fuel gas and the oxidizing agent supplied to a burner in an atomic absorption spectrometer. The device includes a pressure controller and a downstream flowmeter, connected to the aforesaid pressure controller in each of the device's supply conduits to an atomizer, oxidizing agent port and full gas port of the burner. Each flowmeter employed in the preferred embodiment of the invention is comprised of a turbine wheel which is exposed to the gas flowing through the flowmeter. By the rotation of the turbine wheel output, signals are generated depending on the angular rate thereof and thus as a function of the gas flow rate. These output signals are input into a control unit and a set of servomotors, each associated with one of said pressure controllers, are reproducibly adjusted under the control of said control unit, even under unstable pressure conditions, to selected gas flow rates.

A remotely operable pressure regulator and shutoff valve particularly suited for achieving high resolution and flow control, and positive shutoff. The valve is characterized by a spring-loaded ball coaxially aligned with a fluid port to be sealed, a spring-loaded pintle extended through the port into engagement with the ball, for controlling the position thereof, a spring-loaded diaphragm for controlling the position of the pintle, and an axially displaceable spring supported by a movable stop which, in turn, is repositioned by a selectively operable stepper motor. Thus, the pressure-response characteristics for the valve readily can be varied through a selective repositioning of the stop.
