We go a step further in the search for a consistent and realistic supergravity model of large-field inflation by building a class of models with the following features: during slow-roll, all the scalar fields other than the inflaton are frozen by large inflatondependent masses or removed from the spectrum; at the end of inflation, supersymmetry is spontaneously broken with naturally vanishing classical vacuum energy. We achieve this by combining some geometrical properties of the Kahler potential with the consistent use of a single nilpotent chiral superfield, in one-to-one correspondence with the supersymmetrybreaking direction in field space at the vacuum.

On sgoldstino-less supergravity models of inflation

We interpret the diphoton excess recently reported by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations as a new resonance arising from the sgoldstino scalar, which is the superpartner of the Goldstone mode of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking, the goldstino. The sgoldstino is produced at the LHC via gluon fusion and decays to photons, with interaction strengths proportional to the corresponding gaugino masses over the supersymmetry breaking scale. Fitting the excess, while evading bounds from searches in the dijet, Z gamma, ZZ, and WW final states, selects the supersymmetry breaking scale to be a few TeV and particular ranges for the gaugino masses. The two real scalars, corresponding to the CP-even and CP-odd parts of the complex sgoldstino, both have narrow widths, but their masses can be split of the order of 10-30 GeV by electroweak mixing corrections, which could account for the preference of a wider resonance width in the current low-statistics data. In the parameter space under consideration, tree level F-term contributions to the Higgs mass arise, in addition to the standard D-term contribution proportional to the Z-boson mass, which can significantly enhance the tree level Higgs mass.

We study the structure of the soft SUSY-breaking terms obtained from some classes of 4-D strings under the assumption of dilaton/moduli dominance in the process of SUSY-breaking. We generalize previous analyses in several ways and in particular consider the new features appearing when several moduli fields contribute to SUSY breaking (instead of an overall modulus T ). Some qualitative features indeed change in the multimoduli case. A general discussion for symmetric Abelian orbifolds as well as explicit examples are given. Certain general sumrules involving soft terms of different particles are shown to apply to large classes of models. Unlike in the overall modulus T case, gauginos may be lighter than scalars even at the tree-level. However, if one insists in getting that pattern of soft terms, these sum rules force some of the scalars to get negative mass2. These tachyonic masses could be a problem for standard model 4-D strings but an advantage in the case of string-GUTs. We also discuss the possible effects of off-diagonal metrics for the matter fields which may give rise to flavour-changing neutral currents. Different sources for the bilinear B soft term are studied. It is found that the Giudice-Masiero mechanism for generating a “μ-term”, as naturally implemented in orbifolds, leads to the prediction ¦tgβ¦=1 at the string scale, independently of the Goldstino direction.

Some issues in soft SUSY-breaking terms from dilaton¦moduli sectors

The most general basis of operators parametrizing a low-scale departure from the SM particle content is constructed. The SM gauge invariance is enforced, and operators of lowest dimensions are retained separately for a new light neutral particle of spin 0, 1/2, 1, and 3/2. The basis is further decomposed into couplings to the SM Higgs/gauge fields, to pairs of quark/lepton fields, and to baryon/lepton number violating combinations of fermion fields. This basis is then used to systematically investigate the discovery potential of the rare FCNC decays of the K and B mesons with missing energy in the final state. The most sensitive decay modes in the s → d, b → d, and b → s sectors are identified and compared for each type of couplings to the new invisible state.

A bstract We study the problem of modulus stabilisation in the framework of the modular symmetry approach to the flavour problem. By analysing simple UV-motivated CP-invariant potentials for the modulus τ we find that a class of these potentials has (non-fine-tuned) CP-breaking minima in the vicinity of the point of $$ {\mathrm{\mathbb{Z}}}_3^{ST} $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msubsup> <mml:mi>ℤ</mml:mi> <mml:mn>3</mml:mn> <mml:mi>ST</mml:mi> </mml:msubsup> </mml:math> residual symmetry, τ ≃ e 2 πi /3 . Stabilising the modulus at these novel minima breaks spontaneously the CP symmetry and can naturally explain the mass hierarchies of charged leptons and possibly of quarks.

We construct N = 1 supergravity models where the gauge symmetry and supersymmetry are both spontaneously broken, with naturally vanishing classical vacuum energy and unsuppressed Goldstino components along gauge non-singlet directions. We discuss some physically interesting situations where such a mechanism could play a role, and identify the breaking of a grand-unified gauge group as the most likely possibility. We show that, even when the gravitino mass is much smaller than the scale mX of gauge symmetry breaking, important features can be missed if we first naively integrate out the degrees of freedom of mass O(mX), in the limit of unbroken supersymmetry, and then describe the super-Higgs effect in the resulting effective theory. We also comment on possible connections with extended supergravities and realistic four-dimensional string constructions.
