Cellulose, lignin and lignocellulose are important bioresources in the nature. Their effective and environmentally friendly utilization not only reduces dependence on fossil resources but also protects the environment. Recently, a class of novel eco-friendly solvents, ionic liquids, is employed to dissolve and process these bioresources. In this mini-review, we summarized the recent advances of processing and valorization of cellulose, lignin and lignocellulose in ionic liquids. It is expected that this up-to-date survey provides a comprehensive information of this field, and accelerates the development and utilization of the renewable plant biomass resources.

Hemicellulose is an important component of plant cell walls, which is mainly used in biofuels and bioproducts. The hemicellulose extracted from different plant sources and plant locations has different microstructure and molecule. Wheat straw is an important biomass raw material for the extraction of hemicellulose. The aims of this review are to summary the recent developments and various applications of hemicellulose from wheat straw. The microstructure and molecule of hemicellulose extracted by different methods are comparably discussed. The hemicellulose-based derivatives and composites are also reviewed. Special attention was paid to the applications of hemicellulose such as biofuel production, packaging field, and adsorbent. The problems and developing direction were given based on our knowledge. We expect that this review will put forward to the development and high-value applications of hemicellulose from wheat straw.

Recent Developments and Applications of Hemicellulose From Wheat Straw: A Review.

Ionic liquids have shown great potential in the last two decades as solvents, catalysts, reaction media, additives, lubricants, and in many applications such as electrochemical systems, hydrometallurgy, chromatography, CO2 capture, etc. As solvents, the unlimited combinations of cations and anions have given ionic liquids a remarkably wide range of solvation power covering a variety of organic and inorganic materials. Ionic liquids are also considered "green" solvents due to their negligible vapor pressure, which means no emission of volatile organic compounds. Due to these interesting properties, ionic liquids have been explored as promising solvents for the dissolution and fractionation of wood and cellulose for biofuel production, pulping, extraction of nanocellulose, and for processing all-wood and all-cellulose composites. This review describes, at first, the potential of ionic liquids and the impact of the cation/anion combination on their physiochemical properties and on their solvation power and selectivity to wood polymers. It also elaborates on how the dissolution conditions influence these parameters. It then discusses the different approaches, which are followed for the homogeneous and heterogeneous dissolution and fractionation of wood and cellulose using ionic liquids and categorize them based on the target application. It finally highlights the challenges of using ionic liquids for wood and cellulose dissolution and processing, including side reactions, viscosity, recyclability, and price.

A Review on the Partial and Complete Dissolution and Fractionation of Wood and Lignocelluloses Using Imidazolium Ionic Liquids.

Waste polyester-cotton blended textiles have huge production and most of them are incinerated and landfilled, leading to seriously environmental pollution and significant waste of natural resources. Hence, recycling these textile wastes to other value-added products in a sustainable and economical way is meaningful and urgent. In order to completely utilize and valorize polyester-cotton blended textiles, transparent regenerated cellulose films and high-purity recovered polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film were successfully prepared via ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AmimCl). It is indicated that cotton fibers in waste polyester-cotton blended fabrics can be fully dissolved in AmimCl, resulting in efficient separation of polyester and cotton. The transparent cellulose films can be achieved after coagulating and drying processes. Moreover, the changes in morphology and crystalline structure of cellulose films regenerated in different coagulation bath were also investigated in detail, in which cellulose films with dense structure regenerated from water coagulation bath exhibited good mechanical properties and tensile strength was as high as 35 MPa, much higher than that of polyethylene (PE, 9 MPa) self-sealing bag membrane commonly used in laboratory, showing great potential application in packaging and wrapping fields. Meanwhile, the high purity PET residue was also reused as raw material to fabricate transparent and flexible PET film by melt pressing, whose tensile strength can reach 36 MPa. Consequently, a facile and eco-friendly process of recycling and reusing polyester-cotton blended textiles was developed and the high-valued utilization of waste polyester-cotton blended textiles can also be realized.
