This paper presents the modeling, optimization, and validation of a hollow plunger type solenoid for high speed On/Off valve. In the preliminary design, an accurate equivalent magnetic circuit model of the proposed solenoid is carried out, and the magnetic circuit is arranged in Kirchhoffs voltage law matrix form for the convenience of computer calculation. An iterative method is applied to obtain accurate permeability of the nonlinear magnetic material. To optimize the design parameters, a multiobjective optimization process is developed, and the multiobjective particle swarm optimization method is used to obtain the Pareto front of the desired objectives. An approved solution in Pareto front is selected by analytic hierarchy process and validated by the finite element analysis (FEA) method. A prototype based on the final optimized design is manufactured and tested. The experiment results verified the validation proposed design and optimization process.

Multiobjective Optimization of a Hollow Plunger Type Solenoid for High Speed On/Off Valve

A switched inertance hydraulic system uses a fast switching valve to control flow or pressure and is potentially very efficient as it does not rely on dissipation of power by throttling. This article studies its performance using an analytical method which efficiently describes the system in the time domain and frequency domain. A lumped parameter model and a distributed parameter model have been used for investigation using different parameters and conditions. The analytical models have been validated in experiments and the results on a prototype device show a very promising performance. The proposed analytical models are effective for understanding, analysing and optimizing the characteristics and performance of a switched inertance hydraulic system.

Theoretical and experimental studies of a switched inertance hydraulic system

This paper reports on experimental investigations of a switched inertance hydraulic system (SIHS), which is designed to control the flow and pressure of a hydraulic supply. The switched system basically consists of a switching element, an inductance (inertance), and a capacitance. Two basic modes, a flow booster and a pressure booster, can be configured in a three-port SIHS. It is capable of boosting the pressure or flow with a corresponding drop in flow or pressure, respectively. This technique makes use of the inherent reactive behavior of hydraulic components. A high-speed rotary valve is used to provide sufficiently high switching frequency and to minimize the pressure and flow loss at the valve orifice, and a small diameter tube is used to provide an inductive effect. In this paper, a flow booster is introduced as the switched system for investigation. The measured steady-state and dynamic characteristics of the rotary valve are presented, and the dynamics characteristics of the flow booster are investigated in terms of pressure loss, flow loss, and system efficiency. The speed of sound is measured by analysis of the measured dynamic pressures in the inertance tube. A detailed analytical model of an SIHS is applied to analyze the experimental results. Experimental results on a flow booster rig show a very promising performance for the SIHS.

Experimental investigation of a switched inertance hydraulic system with a high-speed rotary valve

A novel hydraulic pressure-boost system utilizing high-speed On-Off valves is studied in this paper. The hydraulic pressure-boost system is analogous to a boost converter in power electronics. High pressure is achieved by braking a hydraulic motor with inertia flywheel through the high-speed On-Off valve. The high pressure is stabilized by a hydraulic capacitor set at the motor output. The steady state and fluctuation characteristics of the pressure-boost system are studied. Research shows that the output pressure is always higher than system pressure and it increases with the duty ratio of pulse width modulation (PWM) signal supplied to the high-speed On-Off valve. It also shows the output pressure fluctuation is greatly influenced by the PWM signal frequency and the oil chamber volume. The hydraulic pressure-boost system was built and tested. It successfully boosted the system pressure from 50 to 116 bar at the PWM signal duty ratio of 0.7. The success of the experiment brings a new way to boost hydraulic pressure.

A Hydraulic Pressure-Boost System Based on High-Speed On–Off Valves

Imagine the scenario in which an electric motor company came to the (correct) conclusion that the power density of hydraulic pumps and motors is much higher than that of electric generators and motors. Then imagine that the board of this company gave the (wrong) instruction to the R&D department to utilize the concept of hydrostatic machines to develop electric generators and pumps with the same power density as their hydraulic equivalents. The reasoning of the board parallels the reasoning of the Forward Look article in which Rudolf Scheidl, Matti Linjama and Stefan Schmidt argue that the future of fluid power will become partly digital: ‘‘The overwhelming success of digital concepts in information, communication and power electronics, as well as the analogy between electrical and fluid power systems, suggest that digital concepts should be beneficial in fluid power’’. Or, to recast this statement: ‘‘The overwhelming success of feathers for making birds fly, as well as the analogy between birds and fish, suggests that feathers should also be beneficial for fish’’. In addition the authors emphasize that ‘‘the positive connotations of the word ‘Digital’ are good selling points’’. Do not be mistaken! I am a strong supporter of research in digital hydraulic systems, although I am not at all convinced that the future of fluid power will be digital. To quote Einstein: ‘‘If at first, the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it.’’ A lot of research in digital fluid power I consider to fall in the category ‘absurd’, in the sense of ‘out of tune’ or ‘dissonant’ with the ruling technology, and I am very curious to see what will be useful in the end. The idea to copy successful electrical concepts in the design of hydraulic systems and components is as old as the hydraulic industry itself. Examples are ‘fluidics’ or ‘fluidic logics’ in which a fluid flow is directed in order to perform analog or digital operations, similar to electronic devices. The authors of the Forward Look article refer to another example, AC hydraulics, in which the principle of a three-phase a.c. network is converted to a three-phase alternating flow network. Other examples are ‘switched reactance hydraulics’ and ‘PWM electrohydraulic control systems’. Aside from some niche applications, none of these promising developments has been applied successfully in the market. In 2011, Linjama presented an overview of the stateof-the-art of digital fluid power. In that article he defined digital fluid power: ‘‘Digital Fluid Power means hydraulic and pneumatic systems having discrete valued component(s) actively controlling system output. Digital fluid power does not mean digital control of analogue components. Some borderline cases are the control of valve spool by using stepping motor or bang-bang positioning of actuators.’’. Linjama furthermore distinguishes between ‘‘parallel connected systems’’ and systems based on ‘‘switching technologies’’. Wang, et al. classify three different digital hydraulic systems.
