Multifunctional fiber‐reinforced polymer (FRP) composites provide an ideal platform for next‐generation smart composites applications including structural health monitoring, electrical and thermal conductivity, energy storage and harvesting, and electromagnetic interference shielding without compromising their mechanical properties. Recent progress in carbon‐based nanomaterials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has enabled the development of many novel multifunctional composites with excellent mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. However, the effective incorporation of such carbon nanomaterials into FRP composites using scalable, high‐speed, and cost‐effective manufacturing without compromising their performance is challenging. This review summarizes the recent progress on graphene and CNT‐based FRP composites, their manufacturing techniques, and their applications in smart composites. Current technical challenges and future perspectives on smart FRP composites research to facilitate an essential step toward moving from research and development‐based smart composites to industrial‐scale mass production are also discussed.

Graphene and CNT‐Based Smart Fiber‐Reinforced Composites: A Review

In the last decade, synthetic fiber, as a reinforcing specialist, has been mainly used in polymer matrix composites (PMC’s) to provide lightweight materials with improved stiffness, modulus, and strength. The significant feature of PMC’s is their reinforcement. The main role of the reinforcement is to withstand the load applied to the composite. However, in order to fulfill its purpose, the reinforcements must meet some basic criteria such as: being compatible with the matrix, making chemical or adhesion bonds with the matrix, having properties superior to the matrix, presenting the optimal orientation in composite and, also, having a suitable shape. The current review reveals a detailed study of the current progress of synthetic fibers in a variety of reinforced composites. The main properties, failure modes, and applications of composites based on synthetic fibers are detailed both according to the mentioned criteria and according to their types (organic or inorganic fibers). In addition, the choice of classifications, applications, and properties of synthetic fibers is largely based on their physical and mechanical characteristics, as well as on the synthesis process. Finally, some future research directions and challenges are highlighted.

A Review on Synthetic Fibers for Polymer Matrix Composites: Performance, Failure Modes and Applications

Abstract The reinforcing effect of graphene oxide (GO) in enhancing the flexural strength and flexural modulus of aramid fiber (AF)/epoxy composites were investigated with GO-AFs at a weight fraction of 0.1-0.7%. The flexural strength and flexural modulus of the composite reached 87.16 MPa and 1054.7 MPa, respectively, which were about 21.19% and 40.86% higher than those of the pure epoxy resin, respectively. In addition, the flexural properties and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of composite reinforced by GO-AFs were much higher than the composites reinforced by AFs due to GO improved the interfacial bonding between the reinforcement material and matrix.

Synergistic effect of ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles on the thermal stability and mechanical properties of glass fiber-reinforced LY556 epoxy composites

Fiber-reinforced polymer composite laminate is weak in the Z-direction, which limits its application. Herein, short carbon fiber (SCF) was decorated with graphene oxide (GO) to form GO@SCF, which was used to improve epoxy matrix and thereby the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of carbon fiber fabric (CFF)-reinforced epoxy composites. The effect of GO@SCF on the ILSS of the composite has been examined. It showed that the optimal content of GO@SCF was 0.1 wt%, and the maximum value of ILSS reached 59.4 MPa, which was 14.7% higher than the pure CFF/epoxy composite. The neat SCF was also employed to enhance the ILSS for the purpose of comparison. The results indicate that GO@SCF has better effect on reinforcing the ILSS than the neat SCF. This study provides an effective approach for the reinforcement of the ILSS of CFF-reinforced epoxy composites.

The invention relates to a waterborne inorganic nano composite material and a preparation method thereof. The waterborne inorganic nano composite material is prepared from nano zinc modified carbon nanotubes and waterborne inorganic resin, wherein the mass ratio of the nano zinc modified carbon nanotubes to the waterborne inorganic resin is (0.01 to 10) to 100. The waterborne inorganic nano composite material prepared by the preparation method is environmentally friendly, has no odor and no toxicity and has very excellent salt mist resistance, long corrosion resistance, high rigidity, strong attachment capability and good toughness. The waterborne inorganic nano composite material has moisture and heat resistance, is not easy to combust and does not explode, so that the waterborne inorganic nano composite material has a wide development space in various corrosion prevention fields.
