Optimal edge server deployment and allocation strategy in 5G ultra-dense networking environments

With the development of the intelligent manufacturing, a large amount of data will be generated at the edge of the network. Industrial data have unprecedented requirements for transmission speed and quality. Edge computing makes full use of the computing power of the terminal, which realizes real-time processing of data. As the first step of the edge computing, the deployment of edge servers is the foundation and key. However, unreasonable edge server deployment strategies cannot meet the requirements of data processing in intelligent manufacturing. In this paper, we establish an edge server deployment optimization model to optimize deployment cost and load balance. Reliability is an important point in intelligent manufacturing, so we propose a fault-tolerant server deployment scheme. When the edge server fails, the fault-tolerant server can replace the fault server in time to ensure the normal workflow. To solve the above model, we propose a binary-based gray wolf genetic strategy algorithm, which improves the global optimal solution of the algorithm. Simulations reveal that up to 10.97
 $$\%$$
 of the total load can be saved by using the gray wolf genetic algorithm and an average of 16.15
 $$\%$$
 time savings can be achieved using our proposed method during hours.

An optimal edge server placement approach for cost reduction and load balancing in intelligent manufacturing

Emerging applications with low-latency requirements such as real-time analytics, immersive media applications, and intelligent virtual assistants have rendered Edge Computing as a critical computing infrastructure. Existing studies have explored the cloudlet placement problem in a homogeneous scenario with different goals such as latency minimization, load balancing, energy efficiency, and placement cost minimization. However, placing cloudlets in a highly heterogeneous deployment scenario considering the next-generation 5G networks and IoT applications is still an open challenge. The novel requirements of these applications indicate that there is still a gap in ensuring low-latency service guarantees when deploying cloudlets. Furthermore, deploying cloudlets in a cost-effective manner and ensuring full coverage for all users in edge computing are other critical conflicting issues. In this article, we address these issues by designing a bifactor approximation algorithm to solve the heterogeneous cloudlet placement problem to guarantee a bounded latency and placement cost, while fully mapping user applications to appropriate cloudlets. We first formulate the problem as a multi-objective integer programming model and show that it is a computationally NP-hard problem. We then propose a bifactor approximation algorithm, ACP, to tackle its intractability. We investigate the effectiveness of ACP by performing extensive theoretical analysis and experiments on multiple deployment scenarios based on New York City OpenData. We prove that ACP provides a (2,4)-approximation ratio for the latency and the placement cost. The experimental results show that ACP obtains near-optimal results in a polynomial running time making it suitable for both short-term and long-term cloudlet placement in heterogeneous deployment scenarios. 

A Bifactor Approximation Algorithm for Cloudlet Placement in Edge Computing

With the advent of mobile Internet and IoT era, various smart terminals generate a large amount of data at the edge of the network, and how to transmit and process these data at high speed poses a challenge to the traditional communication networks. Edge computing, as an emerging framework, can improve the communication capability and data processing capacity of traditional communication networks by improving their architecture. Edge server placement (ESP) technology is one of the key technologies of edge computing, which can effectively reduce data transmission delay and improve data processing efficiency by placing edge servers (ESs) with computing and data storage functions at base stations to sink some functions of the core network to the edge of the network. In this paper, we study the k edge servers placement problem (KESP problem) in smart cities. We first elaborate it as a multi-objective optimization problem for optimal workload balancing and system delay under constraints. Then a modified multi-objective non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm with elite policy (MNSGA-II) is proposed to optimize this problem. Finally, simulations are performed based on real network datasets. The simulation results show that MNSGA-II reduces the system overhead by about 38.4%, 40.6%, and 59.3% on average compared to Random, K-Means, and Top-K.

Optimal deployment of mobile cloudlets for mobile applications in edge computing

Cloud native computing featured by microservice has been regarded as a compelling trend in cloud application development. Edge computing, as an alternative or complemen-tary to cloud computing, is potential to expand the microservice to edge computing, simplifying the development and deployment of edge applications. Despite that, there is still a challenge on how to manage the microservices efficiently in the open and heterogeneous distributed environment. To this end, service mesh provides a potential solution in efficient microservices management. However, as a traditional cloud-oriented architecture, it can not be applied into edge computing directly since the centralized controller policy. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose an edge service mesh architecture with distributively deployed controllers for edge native computing. We further inves-tigate the problem on how to deploy these distributive controllers in a cost efficient manner with the consideration of control cost and the synchronization cost. The problem is formulated into a non-linear optimization form and then linearized into an integer linear programming (ILP) problem. To tackle the computation complexity, we then come up with a customized k-means based algorithm (i.e., ck-means) in polynomial computation complexity. The experimental results verify the efficiency of our ck-means algorithm in comparison with the traditional k-means algorithm.

Cost Efficient Service Mesh Controller Placement for Edge Native Computing

With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), a large amount of data is generated on the network edge. Given the limited computing power of mobile devices (MDs) and access to computing resources from remote clouds, which leads to high latency to MDs, edge computing provides a way to reduce service latency by building a miniature cloud (Cloudlet). MDs transfer tasks they generate to nearby cloudlets for lower latency. Although a lot of research has been done in the field of edge computing, little attention has been paid to how to deploy cloudlets in the network. In this paper, we study the cloudlet deployment on a large number of wireless access points (APs) in an IoT network to optimize both deployment cost and network latency. When the cloudlets has been deployed in the network, we propose a fault-tolerant cloudlet deployment scheme. When the original cloudlets in the network fail, the software-defined network technology is used to start the fault-tolerant cloudlets in time to ensure the stability of the network latency. To address the above problems, we propose a binary-based differential evolution cuckoo search (BDECS) algorithm, which selects the permanent cloudlet deployment location among a large number of APs on the network. Extensive simulations reveal that the proposed algorithm has better performance in minimizing cost and latency compared with other deploymegt algorithms. Moreover, the convergence speed of the BDECS algorithm is also superior to other algorithms.
