The active sonar detection performance in shallow water is mainly restricted by the reverberation level. When target echoes are separable from reverberation according to Doppler shifts, comb waveforms with the bed-of-nails ambiguity function can achieve reverberation suppression. However, some comb waveforms present significantly low transmitting efficiency measured by the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), which may severely affect the detection performance in a noise-limited scenario. In order to effectively improve their transmitting efficiency, the authors propose an approach of comb waveform optimisation with low PAPR via alternating projection in this study. The main idea is based on designing projection constraint sets and corresponding projection operators to achieve the shaping of comb spectra. Hence, the approach has the capability to make a compromise between the transmitting efficiency and reverberation suppression performance. The PAPR control of geometric comb waveforms is implemented in simulations, which prove the validity of the approach.

In this paper, the Joint Optimization Relaxed Alternating Projection (JORAP) method is introduced to design sparse frequency waveforms with low auto- and cross-correlation sidelobes under the unimodular constraint. Firstly, the original optimization issue is converted into spectrum approximation issue via FFT between the aperiodic correlation function and power spectral density. Secondly, different design requirements are synthesized via multi-objective optimization mechanism. Next, the projection space is exploited utilizing its relaxed factor and accelerating factor. This paper presents a waveform design method that uses non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) to separate radar signals from communication signals in power domain, reduces the influence of randomness of communication information on radar performance, and uses Active Constellation Expansion (ACE) to suppress Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) of superimposed signals. Firstly, the causes of overlapping constellation caused by traditional power allocation principle are analyzed, and the optimal power allocation in different modulation orders is given. Secondly, the feasibility of PAPR suppression of superimposed signals by ACE technology is analyzed theoretically. The simulation results show that under different modulation modes and different signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), when the power allocation (PA) is optimal, higher radar signal probability of detection (PD) and the lowest bit error rate of communication symbols can be achieved at the same time. The use of ACE technology ensures the bit error rate and radar performance at the communication end, and at the same time, it has a good suppression effect on PAPR of superimposed signals.
