Environmental and operational conditions effects on Lamb wave based structural health monitoring systems: A review

Acoustoelasticity, or the change in elastic wave speeds with stress, is a well-studied phenomenon for bulk waves. The effect of stress on Lamb waves is not as well understood, although it is clear that anisotropic stresses will produce anisotropy in the Lamb wave dispersion curves. Here the theory of acoustoelastic Lamb wave propagation is developed for isotropic media subjected to a biaxial, homogeneous stress field. It is shown that, as expected, dispersion curves change anisotropically for most stresses, modes, and frequencies. Interestingly, for some mode-frequency combinations, changes in phase velocity are isotropic even for a biaxial stress field. Theoretical predictions are compared to experimental results for several Lamb wave modes and frequencies for uniaxial loads applied to an aluminum plate, and the agreement is reasonably good.

This paper presents GUIGUW v0.1, a graphical user interface (GUI) for the computation of stress-guided wave dispersive features. The software exploits semianalytical finite-element (SAFE) formulations for the calculation of wave-propagation characteristics. The interface allows for the selection of geometrical, mechanical, and frequency-related parameters for the computation. Isotropic and anisotropic materials with linear elastic and linear viscoelastic rheological behaviors can be considered, and any waveguide cross section can be modeled. For each existing wave, the dispersive results can be represented in terms of wave number, wavelength, phase velocity, group velocity (for undamped waveguides), energy velocity, and attenuation (for damped waveguides). By simply working with the GUI, original results for guided stress waves can be obtained.

The need to understand and monitor the integrity of structural components made of composite materials is becoming critical, due to an increase of the use of composites in aerospace, civil, wind energy, and transportation engineering. Off-the-shelf piezoelectric transducers embedded inside the composites or bonded onto the structure surface are a pos- sible solution for on-line structural health monitoring and non-destructive evaluation: they can be used to generate Lamb waves, which are able to detect damage. This article focuses on the behavior of two sets of woven fiberglass/epoxy specimens, one with embedded, one with surface-mounted piezoelectric wafer transducers (lead zirconate titanate). The specimens are tested under axial tensile fatigue at high stress ratio, and the transducers are interrogated in pitch-catch mode at different stages of the specimens' life, while they are subjected to the mean test load (the testing machine is paused). A novel signal processing technique based on wavelet thresholding/denoising and Gabor wavelet transform is discussed. This technique identifies changes in boundary conditions, loading/unloading prior to damage and during damage. It appears to correlate the contour area changes with the so-called characteristic damage state observed in the literature in composite laminates under tensile fatigue.

The effect of load on guided wave propagation.

A non‐destructive technique to measure load in structures such as rails and bridge cables by using guided acoustic waves is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Robust finite element models for predicting the effect of load on guided wave propagation are developed and example results are presented for rods. Reasonably good agreement of experimental results with modelling prediction is obtained. The measurement technique has been developed to perform tests on larger specimens.
