Well-dispersed graphene oxide (GO) in resin matrix has been found for improving corrosion protection performance of the coatings. In this paper, a new strategy relying on waterborne epoxy curing agent contained GO (GO-WCA) was developed, which was prepared via endcapping, modifying and in-situ grafting process. Wherein, endcapping includes blocking the high-activity hydrogen which is used to modulate curing activity. And the modifying process introduces homologous epoxy segment so as to improve compatibility between curing agent, resin matrix and GO. Attributing to this evolvement of WCA and superior barrier effects of GO, the epoxy coatings cured by GO-WCA exhibit desirable corrosion protection capacity. Besides, the failure mode is discovered as bubbling. This environmentally-friendly waterborne curing agent, only with 4.2 g/L VOC content, is anticipated to become available in diverse waterborne epoxy coatings system with excellent barrier property.

Effect of curing agent molecular structures on the tribological and corrosion behaviors of epoxy resin coatings

Novel nanohybrid (β-Ni(OH)2-CNTs) obtained by ultrathin Beta-Nickel hydroxide (β-Ni(OH)2) nanosheets grown along multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was successfully synthesized and then incorporated into UPR to prepare UPR/β-Ni(OH)2-CNTs nanocomposites. Structure of β-Ni(OH)2-CNTs nanohybrid was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy measurements. Compared with single CNTs or β-Ni(OH)2, the dispersion of β-Ni(OH)2-CNTs in UPR was improved greatly. And the UPR/β-Ni(OH)2-CNTs nanocomposites exhibited significant improvements in flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and mechanical properties, including decreased peak heat release rate by 39.79%, decreased total heat release by 44.87%, decreased smoke release rate by 29.86%, and increased tensile strength by 12.1%. Moreover, the amount of toxic volatile from UPR nanocomposites decomposition was dramatically reduced, and smoke generation was effectively inhibited during combustion. The dramatical reduction of fire hazards can be ascribed to the good dispersion, the catalytic charring effect of β-Ni(OH)2 nanosheets and physical barrier effect of stable network structure consisted of β-Ni(OH)2 and CNTs.

In this study, the effect of acetic acid used as catalyst in promoting the decomposition rate of blowing agent (sodium bicarbonate) in epoxy foam was done. Hard epoxy foam was produced using mechanical mixing technique. Epoxy foam has been tested with adding acetic acid at 5 phr and different content of sodium bicarbonate which are 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 phr, respectively. The effect of acetic acid on the viscosity, density, mechanical properties, and dielectric constant has been studied. The results were compared between with and without acetic acid in the system. Viscosity reading was increased with increasing the content of sodium bicarbonate due to the rapid production of bubbles that created porosity in the structure of epoxy foam. The addition of acetic acid is able to reduce the dielectric constant. In overall, the density, flexural strength and modulus dropped for the epoxy foam with acetic acid as compared to that of without acetic acid.

Fabrication and evaluation of acrylated epoxidized castor oil‐toughened diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A nanocomposites

A new curing agent based on palmitoleic acid methyl ester modified amine (PAMEA) for epoxy resin was synthesized and characterized. Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy resins cured with different content of PAMEA along with diethylenetriamine (DETA) were prepared. The mechanical properties, dynamic mechanical properties, thermal properties, and morphology were investigated. The results indicated that the PAMEA curing agent can improve the impact strength of the cured epoxy resins considerably in comparison with the DETA curing agent, while the modulus and strength of the cured resin can also be improved slightly. When the PAMEA/epoxy resin weight ratio is 30/100, the comprehensive mechanical properties of the cured epoxy resin are optimal; at the same time, the crosslinking density and glass transition temperature of the cured epoxy resin are maximal.

Preparation and Application of a New Curing Agent for Epoxy Resin

In the invention, the synthesis is performed at low temperature; synthetic products have a longer application period; and alicyclics with higher rigidity and better stability are introduced in molecular structures of the products, therefore, an epoxy resin curing product has excellent mechanical properties.
