The B Book

The B-Method has an interesting history, where language and tools have evolved over the years. This not only led to considerable research and progress in the area of formal methods, but also to numerous industrial applications, in particular in the railway domain. We present a survey of the industrial usage of the B-Method since the first toolset in 1993 and the inauguration of the driverless metro line 14 in Paris in 1999. We discuss the various areas of applications, from software development to data validation and on to systems modelling. The evolution of the tooling landscape is also analysed, and we present an assessment of the current situation, lessons learned and possible new directions.

The First Twenty-Five Years of Industrial Use of the B-Method

After a number of success stories in safety‐critical domains, we are starting to witness applications of formal methods in contemporary systems and software engineering. However, one thing that is still missing is the evaluation criteria that help software practitioners choose the right formal method for the problem at hand. In this paper, we present the criteria for evaluating and comparing different formal methods. The criteria were chosen through a literature review, discussions with experts from academia and practitioners from industry, and decade‐long personal experience with the application of formal methods in industrial and academic projects. The criteria were then evaluated on several model‐oriented state‐based formal methods. Our research shows that besides technical grounds (eg, modeling capabilities and supported development phases), formal methods should also be evaluated from social and industrial perspectives. We also found out that it is not possible to generate a matrix that renders the selection of the right formal method an automatic process. However, we can generate several pointers, which make this selection process a lot less cumbersome.

Evaluating the suitability of state-based formal methods for industrial deployment

This paper presents our experience of modeling land transportation domain in the formal framework of Event-B. Well-specified requirements are crucial for good software design; they depend on the understanding of the domain. Thus, domain engineering becomes an essential activity. The possibility to have a formal model of a domain, consistent with the use of formal methods for developing critical software working within it, is an important issue. Safety-critical domains, like transportation, exhibit interesting features, such as high levels of nondeterminism, complex interactions, stringent safety properties, and multifaceted timing attributes. The formal representation of these features is a challenging task. We explore the possibility of utilizing Event-B as a domain engineering tool. We discuss the problems we faced during this exercise and how we tackled them. Special attention is devoted to the issue of the validation of the model, in particular with a technique based on the animation of specifications. Event-B is mature enough to be an effective tool to model domains except in some areas, temporal properties mainly, where more work is still needed.

Utilizing Event-B for domain engineering: a critical analysis

Stepwise refinement and Design-by-Contract are two formal approaches for modelling systems. These approaches are widely used in the development of systems. Both approaches have (dis-)advantages. This thesis aims to answer, is it possible to combine both approaches in the development of systems, providing the user with the benefits of both? We answer this question by translating the stepwise refinement method with Event-B to Design-by-Contract with Java and JML, so users can take full advantage of both formal approaches without losing their benefits. This thesis presents a set of syntactic rules that translates Event-B to JML-annotated Java code. It also presents the implementation of the syntactic rules as the EventB2Java tool. We used the tool to translate several Event-B models. It generated JML-annotated Java code for all the considered models that serve as initial implementation. We also used EventB2Java for the development of two software applications. Additionally, we compared EventB2Java against two other tools for Event-B code generation. EventB2Java enables users to start the software development process in Event-B, where users can model the system and prove its consistency, to then transition to JML-annotated Java code, where users can continue the development process.

Review of mechanical abuse related thermal runaway models of lithium-ion batteries at different scales

The validation of formal models is a challenge for formal methods. We propose JeB, a framework which generates and executes simulations of Event-B models, even highly non-deterministic ones. JeB allows users to safely insert pieces of code to supply deterministic computations where the automatic translation fails. We present how JeB translates Event-B model into JavaScript. We define Fidelity as the formal notion which captures the idea of the correctness of a simulation. We define it through proof-obligations.

JeB: Safe Simulation of Event-B Models in JavaScript

The validation of formal specifications is a challenging task. It is one of the factors that impede the penetration of formal methods into the common practices of software development. This paper discusses the issue of validating formal models by executing them in the context of Event-B. The most important problem lies in the non-determinism which often prevents purely automatic tools to execute models. In this paper, we first present and discuss the techniques we have created to allow the execution of models at all levels of abstraction. These techniques rely on users to overcome the barriers resulting from non-deterministic features by either modifying the model or providing ad hoc implementations. Then, we present our main contribution, the formal definition of the notion of fidelity, that guarantees that all the observable behaviors of the executable models are indeed specified by the original (non-deterministic) models. The notion of fidelity can be expressed in terms of proof obligations.

Refinement-based Validation of Event-B Specifications

Ability to scale up from toy examples to real life problems is a crucial issue for formal methods. Formalizing a algorithm used in vehicle automation (platooning control) in a certification perspective, we had the opportunity to study the scaling up when going from a (toy) model in 1D to a (more realistic) model in 2D. The formalism, Event-B, belongs to the family of mathematical state based methods. Increase was quantitative: 3 times more events and 4 times more proofs; and qualitative: trigonometric functions and integrals are used. Edition and verification of the specification scale up well. The crucial part of the work was the adaptation of the mathematical and physical model through standard heuristics. The validation of temporal properties and behaviors do not scale up so well. Analysis of the difficulties suggests improvements in both tool support and formalism.

Scaling up with event-B: a case study

This paper addresses the validation of formal specifications in Event-B through the execution of the specification. Current tools for Event-B, animators and translators, can execute only a restricted set of specifications. So, we propose a third technique, simulation, in which users and tools co-operate to produce an executable instance of the model. After a short presentation of Event-B and our simulation framework, JeB, we show how to use it on two reasonably complex specifications. Observations and analysis from the point of view of validation are presented and discussed.
