As a promising and convenient numerical calculation approach, the discrete element method (DEM) has been increasingly adopted in the research of agricultural machinery. DEM is capable of monitoring and recording the dynamic and mechanical behavior of agricultural materials in the operational process of agricultural machinery, from both a macro-perspective and micro-perspective; which has been a tremendous help for the design and optimization of agricultural machines and their components. This paper reviewed the application research status of DEM in two aspects: First is the DEM model establishment of common agricultural materials such as soil, crop seed, and straw, etc. The other is the simulation of typical operational processes of agricultural machines or their components, such as rotary tillage, subsoiling, soil compaction, furrow opening, seed and fertilizer metering, crop harvesting, and so on. Finally, we evaluate the development prospects of the application of research on the DEM in agricultural machinery, and look forward to promoting its application in the field of the optimization and design of agricultural machinery.

Applications of Discrete Element Method in the Research of Agricultural Machinery: A Review

Modelling and simulation of the grain threshing process based on the discrete element method

To simulate the bending behavior of wheat straw, a flexible straw model was developed based on the Hertz-Mindlin with bonding model using discrete element method. The proposed model was constructed by bonding straw units (filled by multi-spherical method) through parallel bonding keys. By means of a three-point bending test, single-factor sensitivity analysis and calibration of bonding parameters were performed. Results showed that elastic modulus of the flexible straw enhanced with the increase of bonded disk radius, normal stiffness per unit area and shear stiffness per unit area. The three bonding parameters were respectively calibrated to be 2.11 mm, 9.48×109 N/m3 and 4.67×109 N/m3 by solving the regression equation developed from Box-Behnken design. The simulated elastic modulus (in terms of those three calibrated parameters) exhibited 4.20% difference with the measured one. It proved that the flexible straw could accurately demonstrate bending property of the wheat straw. This would not only help to improve accuracy in simulating wheat straw, but also provide references for flexible straw modeling and parameters calibration of other crops.

Modeling of flexible wheat straw by discrete element method and its parameter calibration

The invention discloses a harvester cleaning device airflow field test platform, which mainly comprises two parts of a test device and a data acquisition device, wherein the test device mainly comprises a fan and an airflow channel; and the data acquisition device comprises two parts of a high-speed camera and a pipeline-type wind speed transmitter. The air outlet height and the inclination angle and the rotation speed of the fan are firstly adjusted to form a stable and lasting airflow field in the airflow channel; the pipeline-type wind speed transmitter is then inserted to a wind speed measurement port, the high-speed camera is placed at one side of the airflow channel box body at the same time, after the numerical value of the wind speed transmitter is stabilized, different agricultural materials such as wheat grains, stalks and mixtures of the two are released from a material feeding port, and data acquisition is carried out. The flow speed distribution of the airflow of the fan in the airflow channel can be accurately measured, the movement state of an agricultural material under a different airflow field can be observed in real time, and through stepless and real-time regulation on the movement parameters of the fan, different working conditions can be simulated accurately, the operation is simple, and the measurement precision is high.
